Audi - Which VAGcom? Battery related
Hello all,

Happy Christmas to one and all.

The battery in my wife’s MK3 TT (MY2016) has decided to pack it in. To replace the battery at the local Audi stealer will be 600€.

I’m led to believe that the only thing that makes this ‘difficult’ to do at home is that the new battery needs to be registered to the car’s ECM, so that the alternator adapts its charge.

With this in mind, I’m thinking of spending the cost of the labour (200€) on a diagnostic tool. I’ve heard of VCDS and OBD11. I'd only ever want to tackle fault codes as and when I do jobs on the car, (resetting fault codes after service, battery swap etc), nothing else, so can anyone suggest which of the two is better, or indeed if there is another option that I should consider.

Needs to be something I can easily purchase in the EU, ideally on Amazon. I can get the OBD delivered by Thurs.

Thanks in advance.

Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

I have a OBD11 and have used it a few times on various VW’s.
I’m not the best with these sort of things but it definitely has been useful to set a few things and check fault codes etc.

I see OBD11 have a sale on at present:

We had the very same scenario with our Mini and ended up using a Mini specialist to register the new battery. No new toy to play with Sad , but less money and zero faff Very Happy Jumped ship to reliability - Mitsubishi L200

I used an OBDeleven on our old Audi RS. This was a while back so there are probably better options now but it did everything I wanted. Got rid of annoying bongs, read/cleared faults, customised lights etc. I think I had to pay a bit extra the VAG specific functions but it was very easy to use compared to the BAS tool for the Defender. WARNING.

Thanks all.

Daz, do you need to pay an annual subscription for things like battery registration?

Muddybigdog, unfortunately labour isn’t that cheap here. Oh and they add a % of ‘take the p*ss’ because we’re in the wealthiest part of France after Paris.

Thanks Zed. Monsieur Le Grenadier

I'm on the VW California forum and Carista seems to be the "go to" OBD adaptor.

I just looked on their website and it is listed as being suitable for the Mk3 Audi TT.

Details on how to register the battery here :

https://carista.com/en/blog/battery-regist...ff5wxcivsg

They have an offer on at the moment for the EVO adapter and 12 months subscription to the Pro service for £75.99.

Not sure if they will ship overseas to you, or if you can find a local supplier, but it might be worth considering. And asking for confirmation that the device will support battery registration on an Audi TT Mk3.

Thanks Daz.

Battery sourced for 180€ vs Audi’s 400€ and I await the arrival of the OBD before fitting. Cheeky saving of 300€, plus some permanent software for the tool kit. Sadly the 300€ won’t be going on the Def…. Big Cry Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've got the Autel AP200, which is a bluetooth dongle that links to an app on your phone.

You get one free manufacturer for detailed diagnostics, but you can still do your basic OBDII stuff on anything. If you want another manufacturer, you can add them in at a cost but the license key only lasts a year on those that you add in (2nd/3rd etc)

I registered Mercedes as that's my daily, but the standard OBDII setting works great on my 2013 110.

They are only £50 so a bit of a bargain, and it's worked great for me so far. You can definitely do replacement battery coding on detailed diagnostic.
