Serpentine belt change
Dear all..
quick question on the Puma 2.2 serpentine belt change. I am looking to do this shortly at 100000 miles.
Is it recommended to also change the idlers and tensioner at the same time. And if so, OEM or branded? anyone had any experience of this. Thanks for any feedback. Thumbs Up 2015 90 XS Santorini Black

Belt change only is fine unless there is problems. No Guts, No Glory.

Unless they are noisy, I would leave them alone. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Sodโ€™s law will likely apply.

You wonโ€™t get tensioner, idler etc and when you remove belt you find they need replacing.

OR

You will get tensioner , idler etc and when you remove belt you find they are in perfect condition.

I've changed the bearings in two pulleys on my 17-year-old, 279k mile 2.4 Defender. They usually last a long time.

It's only on its second drive belt, the original lasted 200k miles and was completely serviceable when I changed it.

When do you usually decide to change the belt? Mine started getting noisy when cold/humid so Iโ€™m gonna change it. Just wondering if the noise could mean a pulley is on its way. Making my Defender great again. (Or trying to at least xD)

50k miles, but I think they can do a lot more than that by far.

I kept the original just in case, but as Blackwolf has had they last a long time.
Equally they are easy to change and relatively cheap compared to some items.

I changed my last one at 50k, the current one I have now is on 52k Iโ€™m going to keep it going, as it has a lot of life, miles isnโ€™t everything age is also a factor I tended to change it due to age rather than miles in my case. No Guts, No Glory.

My original one lasted 85k/10 years and had no visible signs of deterioration, so I've kept is an an emergency spare. I only changed the belt, but not very long afterwards a couple of the idlers got squeaky so had to go back in and do those. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Remove the upper fan shroud and the clutch fan unit. Start the engine. Use a stethoscope, long metal rod, or long screw driver to listen to each pulley bearing. Touch the tip to pulley bearing mounting bolt and the other end touching your ear. Sound quiet with a steady noise? Probably ok. Noisy or erratic noise means they are on their way out. You can simply replace the pulley bearings. Much cheaper than buying the whole assemblies.

France 2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 CSW Zermatt Silver
2008 Puma with A/C here. 140K kms.
I recently did a full refresh of most accessory belt pulley bearings.
The fan one was giving signs of weakness (noisy, running dry), so though might as well do the others that can be done relatively easy with a basic 6T press. Found also that the deflection pulley bearing that is toothed had a bearing leaking its grease out (see picture).

I took note of all bearing numbers that came out and the ones I replaced them with, for future reference, and if that can help others sourcing replacement bearings before attempting the job.

nbr refers to the nbr in attached picture for ease of identification.
nbr 2 -> deflection pulley PQH500120 -> factory NTN 6303LHA -> replaced with genuine PQH500120 pulley
nbr 3 -> deflection pulley PQH500100 -> factory NTN 6303LHA -> replaced with new NTN 6303LHA
nbr 8 -> fan pulley -> factory NSK 30BD40DF2 -> replaced with NSK 30BD40DF2
nbr 9 -> tensioner pulley PQG500210 -> factory NTN 6203LAX30 -> left as is (good condition)
nbr 11 -> deflection pulley PQR500230 -> factory J37FE-S-992 -> replaced with SKF 6203-RSH

note on nbr 9 : left as is, but if I was to change it I would have put an SKF 6203-RSH since the NTN 6203LAX30 is impossible to source.
note on nbre 2 : it looks possible to drill the rivets to change the bearing and rebuilt with bolts and nylock nuts, although it didn't tried id, and simply changed for a new pulley assembly.
note on nbr 8 : this is the most complicated one... there are write ups on def2 already explaining how to approach changing the bearing.
