Replacing lift up handle wind up window door glass
Hi all,

I own a 300 TDI with lift up handle doors, including sliding wind up windows.

The mechanisms were gone and rusted up, so I decided to overhaul and do the glass, sliders (MTC8477), channels and rubbers (MWC4763).

I am now running into the following issue:
I can't for the life fit the slider + rubber on the bottom of the window.

Every instruction I find is for the puma doors with the tabs fitted to the glass

Is there a trick? can anyone assist?

When I fitted mine, I applied small amount of vaseline on the rubber, fit the rubber in the steel, then tap everything onto the glass. The vaseline will get absorbed in the rubber after a short while. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I'll give it a try.

Did you have to use a hammer? I really have to force it in there

Cant really remember, but if you use a rubber mallet or similar you have to be very careful not to deform the channel where the wheels for the scissor mechanism need to slide.

Keep also in mind that tempered glass is very sensitive if struck by a hard object on the edges. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

You're not trying to squeeze 5mm glass into a 4mm holder are you ? Remember that glass in these doors is 5mm think but in later doors is 4mm.

That could be the case. I order them on SP4x4.

The glass is new saying 5mm. The slider channels don't specify.

But I feel you might be right. Will check

If it helps, I installed MTC8477. My doors are from 1987/88, with push button. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
