Stock TD5 Aircon Improvement
Hi,

Has anyone had a go at making the stock AC unit more effective? I have mine out and thought I would try and uplift it from being a passenger knee cooler.

I am interested in this subject too! Personally I think replacing the condenser (radiator looking thing at the front) will give you the most noticeable difference. Have not done it myself, but did so on a classic range rover once and the difference was remarkable

Yes. I think a modern parallel flow one is worth exploring.

The flow seeks to path of least resistance. The only way on the current setup is to channel the flow further to the centre so that flow to all the vents are more equal.

This is easier said than done.

Yes. Although effective duct louvre controls could help. With possible restriction of nearer vents and a stronger blower motor.

Speaking of which the motor is of an odd type. I can’t find much trace of it on the interwebs…

They’re perfectly adequate for the UK…

I like cool knees.

Good look with your quest and I shall be keeping an eye on this thread.

the company is Tokushu denso and they have a faster rated motor. Only problem they are the epitome of a contracted Japanese producer and despite me asking them how i can get my hands on one of their motors in perfect Japanese, they can't imagine how to sell just one. Minimum order 1000 pieces. They forwarded me to a number of their purchasers but they didnt want to help. I did get a knock off in Australia but unfortunately its not higher rated so really doesnt solve the problem of poor performance.

Greetings from the other side of the bay (Mount Eliza).

I just ordered an OEX dual blower that’s close in size. It was cheap so I am going to see if I can make it work.

Am also considering rigid ducting to a rear passenger vent, and butterfly valves or similar to route air to windscreen and side windows…

A parallel condenser is a modern alternative to old school serpentine. Greater throughput of refrigerant.

I’m going to measure mine and then look for a close match.

There are a few discussions here about suitable and available/affordable alternative condensers that either come with the frame, fit in the existing frame or are made to fit without a frame. All are the more modern and more effective design. Other than the fit, the trick is in the connection points to avoid re-plumbing the whole front end.

The cooler - closer to ambient air temperature - the condensed refrigerant, the more effective it can evaporate and extract heat from the cabin at the evaporator side.

I don't mind making my own lines. I think I'd prefer one where they exit on the LHS rather than both sides.

I'll work around the biggest condenser I can get in there. As long as it won't block the intercooler - where I will get the Allisport one.

Any suggestions? I saw a post saying the original Disco 1 condenser fits (although I would want a modern alternative).

UPDATE: I am probably getting the Sanden CNX413 as it was fitted here in Australia to 300TDIs, is larger, and is parallel flow!

Also, I think I will try and source new bearings and seals for the Denso 10PA compressor. Has anyone here rebuilt theirs?

Ordered. As well as the OEX blower from them. Will have to redo piping as inlet and outlet are on LHS.

given the brackets are flush, is there any reason not to mount this back to front or upside down? What is the rating on the blower (rpm)

Cheers
Dale
