TD5 starting problems ?
Good evening guys
I have a 2002 Defender TD5 128k miles I have owned it for just over 12 months it’s had a few issues but over all it’s been great.
On Monday morning I drive it about 8 miles first time I have driven it in about a week. Without any noises or performance change the EML suddenly comes on. I continue about 2 miles and think nothing more of it during the day. In the afternoon 6hrs later I go to start it to go home it cranks and turns over but just will not fire makes no attempt to start. I listen for the fuel pump which is operating ok after about 15/20 minutes and trying about 8 times to start it I leave the ignition on wait for the fuel pump to stop and go completely silent flick the key and it’s starts.
I drive home 8 miles no EML light no lack of performance runs perfectly.
Once home I turn it off drop stuff indoors come back out to investigate. Again it just will not start !!
It turns over well but will just not even attempt to start. Top of fuel filter gets warm can’t hear pump tried primming but can’t hear it doing anything try about 10 times to start it nothing, I check fuel pump relay which is operating ok fuses for pump etc ....?
Try it first thing this morning starts first time ?( but i didn’t use it today) Leave it run for a few minutes it Rev’s And sounds good.
Come home from work tonight starts first time and again revs fine no EML ??
It’s seems to have some kind of issue I’m thinking something electrical to stop the fuel ? Any ideas or guidance would be appreciated.
Many thanks 👍

Check you get pump noise each time before you attempt a start. If you are not getting any pump noise. Wiggle the relays.

Another thing to check is to clean the crank sensor. These can get mucky and cause issues. It’s in the bell housing by brake servo/air filter box.

I have checked that the relay clicks each time I switch on the ignition which seems to be operating ok. I will check the crank sensor and clean up the terminals etc
Thanks

The crank sensor needs to be removed for cleaning. Bit fiddly, but simple 👍🏻👍🏻
