D300 engine failures?

I would think that for a new engine/car combination research on longevity would be limited.

Personally I am more into second hand cars, I find them more interesting and more to my taste. Its actually amazing how many cars there are were there are fundamental issues with the engine or the drivetrain to the point that this is priced in (unless you are an idiot). What's even more amazing is that most manufacturers do nothing about it, hoping to ride out the bad news.

Landrover had their fair share. I took the gamble and bought a Disco 4 with the notoriously crap TdV6 (ford) and sure enough it cratered on me and I had to write it off as a replacement engine was simply too expensive. I passed on the TDV8 (turbos issues) and the Td6 (L322-BMW - gearbox issues) and settled on a P38 4.0V8 with new liners etc. At least support for these engines is better.

Maybe the D300 is another one on the list?

Every manufacturer has an "engine failure" scare story.

Last week l was talking to someone whose 30,000 mile Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio lunched it's engine and apparently Alfa Romeo don't supply spares for this unit.

So he had to have a new engine. The bill? £45,000

Go on the internet and type any manufacturer followed by "engine failure"

FYI, the ZA vehicles don't have a DPF, and the service interval is 32,000km Shocked --

l would imagine if people don't service the engine until the first recommended service at 21,000 miles we'll see a few failures

I really doubt! I am still amazed when in the late 80s an independent Italian car magazine tested the “Fire” 998cc Fiat engine. They sealed the oil cap and run the engine for 62500 miles without oil change or top up. They dismantled the engine to look for damage and barely found any! The wear was about 20% with no oil change. The engine was running mineral oil with 80s tech.
21k miles interval on a new engine seems adequate. Even though I will still change it at 6k miles…

l remember back then a synthetic oil was introduced which the manufacturer said could be left for 25,000 miles between oil changes.

lt didn't succeed because people just couldn't cope with the prospect of not changing their oil for so long.

However the FIRE engine was a basic 45bhp petrol unit, had no turbo, and could probably survive such abuse. l still wouldn't like to take the chance on a modern 300hp diesel with turbo and supercharger.

ZA Service schedule is the same as Australia, however there is a standard Land Rover get out
statement which is that servicing/oil changes may be required more often depending on the driving
conditions (hazardous/dust/towing etc) plus the vehicle may throw up a service message at earlier
mileage if it senses the oil is not up to scratch.

Generally I change the oil and Filters on our P400 every 12,000 km/6 months due to using it for off road
and towing, and a full service at 24K/12 months, with the history of choc crank TDv6's and diesel I4's
in other JLR models failing due to oil dilution, I take LR's marketing (oh sorry servicing)
recommendations with a large dose of salt. yet another pommie bar steward down under

Basic engines can take a lot of abuse.

l used to own a Renault Kangoo van with the 1150cc petrol engine (no turbo)

l did 100,000 in it and it was serviced regularly. l sold it to a friend who used it in his business. lt was thrashed around by all the staff as a "pool" van
After a couple of years (and a further 40,000 miles) he asked me if l could give it a service.

When l took out the sump plug about a litre of sludge came out and
that was it. And l am not exaggerating. l don't know how it had any oil pressure but the light wasn't on. The air filter was missing.

Anyhow l put new oil and filter in, plus an air filter. The engine ran as well as ever and lasted a further two years until the van was scrapped due to corrosion.

Remember that Renault engine was quite happy to be abused. My granny’s Clio 1.2 had blown the head at 180k miles, it was only 250 quid to replace gasket and skim the Head, including the mechanic to do the job… and it was only 2006…
However not missing the crap car, quality, interior and the rest of it…
Life is too short… and the 6 Ingenium is a marvel of our times…

I am on quite a few Aussie forums and as such i have not heard of many issues and in particular
failures with the I6 diesels in Oz, a few early model D240's I4's have suffered engine failures
it has been reported.. There has been a few teething issues with the 6 cylinder diesels clutch
packs flagging only 2wd available etc and the BISG recall.. but yet to see any major hand wringing
in terms of general engine reliability issues.. yet another pommie bar steward down under
