Rattling whining noise when idling
I’ve just noticed a noise (possibly bearing) when engine is idling, when I depress the clutch the noise disappears completely, a new clutch was fitted 18 months ago.

So the noise is there when you press down on the clutch pedal (disengaging the clutch) and it disappears when you release (depress) the pedal thereby engaging the clutch.

So yes that would indicated a faulty pilot or clutch release bearing.

The fact that a new clutch was fitted 18 months ago is more of confirmation it is probably that. Car parts are available in very poor quality nowadays and if you are not careful the new parts don't last very long at all.

The OP says that there is a noise with the clutch in/engaged/[pedal not pressed] which disappears when the clutch is out/disengaged/[pedal is pressed].

This indicates that the noise is not from the release bearing nor is it from the spigot bearing since both of these are only doing anything with the clutch disengaged/out/[pedal pressed]. There should be no movement in either when the pedal is up.

A noise with the clutch in/engaged/[pedal up] generally points to gearbox bearings (unless it is a rattle and a Puma in which case it would be the driven plate disintegrating - this is unlikely on a TD5 since the latter has a DMF and unspring driven plate).

Well yes, I suppose this is where my non-native english is failing me so therefor I asked the OP to confirm. Press - depress, to un-press the pedal?

Anyhow either way we agree what could likely cause the noise: either the clutch or the gearbox.

In our weird English language "press" and "depress" both mean "push down" Question

So pedal pressed = pedal depressed = clutch out = clutch disengaged

Pedal released = pedal up = clutch in = clutch engaged.
