Hi all,
Off to Morocco over New Year (Sahara Desert Challenge) in my L663 5.0 V8 Any suggestions of sensible spare parts to take with me? And/or any other sensible precautions? On my list already: - good tool kit - 2x spare tyres - GAP IID tool for diagnostics - spare air filters Guess traditionally some oil and coolant would be good to have? Maybe a fuel filter? (Have had bad experiences with diesel in the past but no idea how problematic petroleum might be) Thoughts/experiences welcomed! (Especially new defender / 5.0 V8 experience) Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Set of front brake pads and a 2nd spare wheel/tyre if you can fit it in. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

I repaired one of my tyres over four months ago and still as good as the day I fixed it. |

Give it a good look at before you go or get someone else to look underneath and around for any potential issues before you go 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

Fuel additive? Fridge Solar battery station Battery starter pack Also, beware that you can drain the battery pretty quickly opening and closing doors etc when camped. Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy. |

On the Sahara Desert Challenge last year, the new Defenders faired quite well over the whole challenge, except for diesel ones needing more AdBlu than they had accounted for. ( however for you this will not be too much of an issue as you will be petrol - in Morocco the petrol stations were very modern most of the time) Fuel economy will be something to keep an eye on though so make sure you have your 2 extra cans of fuel and keep your fuel tank and your water container topped up. The standard suppension worked well for the new defenders, so leave this alone. Have your suspension and bushes checked before you go, also have the CV joints checked as well. Take lots of fuses and as you have mentioned, an OB2 code reader which can also clear faults. - a copy of the hand book in PDF format would be good to see what goes where and help the team mechanic fault find when things play up. The new defenders also went though tyers in the upper parts of Mauritania where they were shredded by the rocks in the sand. so, as the pre-trip list recommends, take 2 good spares, a good air pump and deflator. I would advise you keep the tyre size standard so as you can swap with others if a need arises (for them as well as you !) This worked very well when several tyres were damaged and spares were needed between the team. Steel rims would be of benefit as some of the vehicles did deform their rims and these were able to be bashed back into shape to continue the trip. We kept our alloy ones but were lucky and did not rim the wheels at any time. You will be moving fast to keep up with the others as the distances covered each day is rather excessive. so fuel economy will be something to keep your eye on. Thanks all for the advice!
I think I'm well covered on the expedition front itself (camping, fridge, solar, fuel, water etc etc) but all advice appreciated & worth reiterating! On the car front itself I'm running 265/60/20 Yokohama Geolandar X-ATs which are supposed to be (and seem) very tough with decent 3-ply sidewalls etc., and I have 6 overall so hoping that should be sufficient. I'm not doing the Mauritania/Senegal legs as well so I think that reduces a degree of the risk. Obviously I'd love to have 18 inch steelies but not possible on the V8 with the massive brakes. Good advice on the ARB tyre plug kit - I do have one somewhere so will dig it out Luckily I need new brake pads anyway so being done this week. I haven't heard/read much in the way of 'known faults' for the New Defender / V8 which is encouraging but if anyone knows of anything do let me know! I guess I probably should take some oil and some coolant? Any other parts worth taking? air springs? any belts etc? Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

If you are only doing the Morocco leg (we only did that last year) then the spares can be less as there are some good support networks in the county and you will not be in the area that is renowned to damage the tyres - so alloys were fine for us.
Again in the country you can find tyre repair stops all long the main roads and they are very cheap - so have the kit as a back up, but the roadside stops are worth it. We will be over there at the same time as you but not doing the chalange this year so watch out for us on your way back north !
