Soft top roof rack - holes in the canvas? Bad idea?
Hi all,
Looking to improve the camping setup on my soft top 90 this winter, namely a good way to mount a roof rack… I have the exmoor heavy duty soft top kit fitted and have been trying to come up with neat solutions for attaching some roof bars. Current thoughts as follows:

Biggest reservation clearly is the pass-through holes in the canvas. Plan would be a small circular incision for the bolt to pass through, using spreader plates + rubber pads etc to protect the canvas as much as possible, clamping tight with the bolt should make it waterproof (enough). When the roof rack is not mounted, I’d just chuck the bolt back in the hole and nipping up to retain waterproofing, hopefully not too unsightly?
My concern is that this would restrict any natural movement/stretching of the canvas overtime (it is fairly new but has had plenty of soakings so should be entirely ‘shrunk fit’ now). I’m also concerned about how the material around the hole may fray - I think I’d need to stitch a border around the hole to prevent the fraying from spreading.
I’d be interested if anyone has any experience of making (intentional) holes in their canvas for similar purposes? Or has any other bright ideas for soft top roof racks? Or by any chance has a spare sand canvas for a 90 going cheap? Matt.
