Oil change
So this time l decided to change the oil "properly" that is, by draining it from the sump rather than sucking it out from the dipstick with a pump.

First of all you need to remove both under trays because the rear one overlaps the front one. Two of the rear bolts on the front undertray are underneath the fibre under shield and difficult to get off, although it can be done with a spanner rather than a socket.

Make sure your oil container will hold 10 litres as the vehicle holds nearly 9 litres of oil (D250) and remove the oil filter first because about a cupful of oil drains into the sump when you remove the filter.

Beware that when you remove the sump plug the oil will come out under some pressure, it missed the bucket completely and went straight up my arm. l retired to the garage to change my jumper and clean the oil off my arm. In the meantime the oil flow slowed, and while l had re-adjusted the bucket to catch it, eventually the stream missed the bucket at the rear. When l came out, there was an oil slick to rival the Exxon Valdez on my drive.

Having cleaned that up the rest of the job was straightforward. You'll need at least some drive on ramps to do it though.
And preferably a torque wrench with the correct size socket as the oil filter housing needs tightening to 25Nm
Oh and it's a bit of a task getting the front undertray back under the fibre under guard as the under tray is tapered in the wrong direction. (insert the undertray one side first then push the fibre under guard back on the other side to fit it)

l might suggest making a rectangular hole in the front undertray to aid future oil changes, and making a cover for the hole. Not a difficult task.

Despite all this the new oil was black immediately after running the engine. At least l know it's got new oil and filter.

My local LR Specialist said they would change the oil for £50 labour plus VAT via the sump plug (not sucking it out) Next time l think l will take them up on their offer.

Sucking method - does your pipe go into the dipstick tube or just over the top? On my 2011 4.4 tdv8 the Draper vacuum pump pipe fitted snugly over the top inch or so. MY25 90 D350 X-Dynamic HSE in Silicon Silver and coil sprung

Yep! A lot of oil comes out very quickly!! I too ended up with a sleeve full of hot oil and missed the catcher.

Boiling water, a bottle of washing up liquid, scrub with a yard brush, and a blast with the washer cleans up the mess. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

On the D250 (diesel) the tube goes down the dipstick hole.
