Engine failure
Anybody seen the video from Barum engines on you tube about the failure of a 6 cylinder diesel engine, which if you watch the previous video came out of a Defender. Supposedly vehicle was 2 weeks out of warranty with just over 30k miles. Seems to imply that it had been serviced after 2 years but looking at the state of the oil I wouldn’t have thought so. 110 XS 250 MY 23 Gondwana Stone, Cold climate pack and towbar

I don't believe that the engine was ever serviced!

I also wonder if the owner put "something" in the engine because I find it hard to relieve that an engine van get as much sludge inside in just 3 years, but maybe I am wrong!!

I find it hard to believe that an engine three years old with 21k miles could be in that condition without something else having happened, especially since (according to the engine techs in the video) the service interval is two years/24k miles, so in theory it hasn't even reached the first service on mileage. Potentially that could be the original oil, and it is to be hoped that the factory used a suitable oil.

I wonder what happened to do that to it! I hope that they get the sludge analysed, or find some fault while stripping the engine to answer the question. Over the years I have worked on many traditional diesels which have not been serviced literally for years, or even decades, and have many tens of thousands of miles and which are far cleaner than that.

One of my colleagues at work has just been advised to sell his Jaguar something-or-other because the Ingenium has a fault which is uneconomical to repair. It is between three and four years old, around 30k miles, and the depreciation on the vehicle together with the repair costs and unavailability of parts make it not worth repairing. I'm glad I don't own an Ingenium!

ln three years of being on the Defender L663 forum l've only heard of one failed 3.0 Ingenium diesel and there are some that have done much higher mileage than that one.

Mine's currently on 15,000 miles. The oil has been changed twice and there was no sludge whatsoever in the sump.

l don't know how that engine could possibly have got into that state.

lf the owner was doing a lot of short journeys the service indicator would have brought forward an oil service.

Mine is telling me it needs an "oil service" at 16,500 miles. (l had the oil changed twice already but didn't get the service indicator reset)

How long would it take to strip the top off an engine to take a look? Just for peace of mind! It seems remarkably bad.

You wouldn’t need to strip it…just open filler cap and look in with a torch..
You could stick your finger in!

If you watch the video before this one, not the live one, the engine came out of a Defender and a comment is made that the owner also has a Range Rover. It’s not misinformation. I agree that it can never have had an oil change but even then the amount of sludge seems excessive. 110 XS 250 MY 23 Gondwana Stone, Cold climate pack and towbar

Shocked No way it that just normal motor oil...

Back in the 1980's when we were all young and dumb a friend of mine bought an old car (Can't remember the make) just after pass his driving test. He checked the oil and found that it needed topping up. he asked his dad for help but he just told him that that the oil was in the garage and not to overfill it.

My buddy topped the oil up and a week later the engine packed up. He had topped the car up with linseed oil and I can remember looking inside the engine and seeing sludge and crap like in the video.

I think that someone has deliberately put something in the oil? Maybe he is going through a messy divorce?

I think you will find that 'ordinary' cheap mineral oil ran for wayyy too many miles will make your engine look like that.

I overhauled a 3.5 V8 with many more miles that looked like that inside. You had to clean it with a screw driver. Not uncommon for unmaintained engines to look like that in the 80s when oil technology was not as developed as it is now.

It's only done 20k though, I doubt even cheap mineral oil would do that that quickly.

how much oil was left in the sump?

If the engine was burning oil and had never been topped up in 30k miles the remaining oil would have been under ever increasing duress until at the point of failure the engine could have been running on just a litre of oil
