List it at a nominal €5 - I presume it has no commercial value (locking cap without the key?)

Does that still work? I've read that it doesn't and you'll likely get charged for whatever they think the value should be. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Every commercial item is now subject to vat (and then the processing fee)
But, if the item is sent as a gift, and under the gift threshold (which i think is GBP 15 - but im never certain if that is item + post, or combined) then there is no vat to pay. Gifts over the GBP 15 threshold get vat on the item, vat on the postage, processing fee, then vat on the processing fee.... Anything expensive enough to get charged duty also gets vat on the duty! So, yeah, get the sender to value it as a low value gift. Obviously the insurance can not be above the declared value, so, if its a valuable item, pay for an express service (couriers treat express services with a very very slight amount of extra care) (note: as per the op, im not talking tax evasion, but, much more frequently, you just want the item moved as quickly as possible, without delays, and "gifting" objects is often the best way to achieve that) |

Its not always that simple - there are time limits in place for that kind of stuff, and then you would need the paper trail etc.etc Its way easier just to gift it, and then its done. |
