Well I've aired my views on the other thread so here's my thoughts on yours..
It's quite possible it is trying to regen more frequently because of the soot load..as I said in the other thread the best indication if you are unsure is to try an app that allows exhaust gas temp to be monitored..you will have 3 temp sensors and I'm pretty sure two of them can be monitored by the likes of the torque app.. Trouble is once the ash build up gets excessive then there is less tolerance to soot load..hence the more frequent attempts to regen...the ash build up would be the result of all the regeneration attempts to clear or burn the soot..the ash would require removing mechanically... They reckon the best way to sort a high ash level is a dpf removal and proper clean, but some offer in car treatment through sensor holes..not sure how that removes the ash but it possibly does clear the soot.. That should get you back to less frequent attempts to regenerate the dpf.. Perhaps speak to firms that offer the service and see what they say .. Again ideally you could have data on your differential pressure sensor before and after as an indication of the worth of a clean.. |

If you are in South Wales, and I know you said you are not planning on going far, but would it not be worth getting on the M4 Motorway and head for the Severn Bridge. By the time you get over the bridge the engine will be up to temperature and it will have probably regen’ed. (I’m sorry, it’s been a while since I last went to Bridgend. Not sure if the politicians have dropped the M4 speed limit to 20mph as well - although I remember some Friday nights, getting to 20mph would have been aspirational!)
I have a 2014 Puma and I am paranoid about this particular problem. I always try and take a ride out once a month to get everything nice and warm. My issue is unlike your obligatory speed limits, all of our main roads have roundabouts be that the A47, A11 or A140. The A14 in Suffolk is our nearest open road and depending on the traffic, it can sometimes be difficult to maintain a good speed in the traffic! |

28k ? Honestly ? I'd havé thé 2 DPF pressure sensors checked ( in &. Out ) |

Oil dilution is always going to be a problem for you with so little miles and lack of high speed runs. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Hi.
Thanks for all the replies so far. There's one other question that I'm not 100% clear on. I've mostly read that the car has to be travelling at over 30mph in order to maintain a regen. However, I've also read that there's possibly a way of achieving this by putting the gearbox into low range and then driving it. This makes sense to me as I would have thought that the higher that the revs are the more pressure that is then being put through the DPF(?). I'm guessing that this might not be being suggested by JLR as there might be risks associated with driving at 'speed' in low range...? |

It's not about speed or low range or pressure in the dpf..it's about loading the engine so that the exhaust gas temp are higher and the engine is at full operating temp and can be maintained like that for a period of time..
I'm not saying it is the case but if someone said that regens were not allowed if the ecu knows low range is been engaged I'd believe that.. A good run in a higher gear with a reasonable load would facilitate the optimum conditions I think..that's when the engine temperature is at it highest.. |

Thanks, Andy. I'm reading that engine load seems to be a factor ...which is a bit odd as I regularly pull my daughter's horse around in an Ivor Williams trailer ( ) (circa 1.5 tons in total) - which I'm assuming could be beneficial - as long as I maintain 30mph+ !!

Sounds 👌, if you can be maintained for long enough..
Iyt was mentioned above..it's low milage but I suppose it might be worth seeing about a removal and clean if nothing else resolves the frequency of the attempted regens..👍 |

Ok thanks again.
Going back to my original post - do you think that there's any value in finding our whether there have been any software patches or updates (I can't believe that what is essentially an agricultural vehicle would warrant something like this mind!) from JLR in the last 5 years or so...? As I say, I've not had the car serviced by them since I've owned it and I've either done most of it myself or taken it to my indi. Thanks. |

As far as I am aware, JLR have mostly washed their hands of the old Defenders after production ceased. I wasn’t aware that there had been any manufacturer upgrades to the ECU.
Unless anyone else knows otherwise? |

There were some upgrades in 2013 / 2014 which may concern a MY 2014

Hi Julie,
Many thanks. Is this something that I'd have to go to JLR in order to get or can this be done via 'after market'? |

If you serviced your truck, the ECU would have been updated. The updates are in the records of JLR. Just give them a call ...
