300TDi / R380 ringing noise when changing gear
My 300TDi 110 Station Wagon has started making an odd noise just after changing gear (when releasing the clutch to take up drive).

It sounds like when a brake disk is tapped with a spanner and as though it is coming from within the bell housing. The only culprits in there I can think if would be either the flywheel, the plate on the clutch cover or the release arm.

The clutch action doesn't seem to have changed.

There's nothing loose under the car.

I experimented releasing the clutch with the over drive then the transfer box in neutral but was none the wiser, if anything I thought perhaps the noise might be emanating from the transfer box but that seemed less likely than the bellhousing.

I've tried the obvious "loose things in the car" - the hilift moved to the rear and had it's top-clamp tightened and loose items in the seatbox locker have been rehomed in a plastic box. The noise remains.

1. Does it still make the noise if you press the clutch and release with gbox in neutral?
2. Does it still make the noise if you press the clutch and release with gbox in a gear and transfer box in neutral
3. Is there a difference in test 2 if you select different gears?
4. Does it still make the noise if you press the clutch and release with drive in low range? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Nothing sinister, a failed hooke joint at front of transfer box.
Thank you for the suggestions.

I was taught to always suspect a universal joint when you hear that sound.
