On long journeys on warm days it can get so hot that you can burn your hands if you touch the seat rail or metal parts of the hand brake lever. It’s worse with the 2.2’s as a DPF regen produces even greater heat. As others have said, if you open the drivers window it makes it worse as it draws heat via the seatbox.
I’ve found that if you open the passenger window it, not the drivers,it cools things down a bit. Better still, keep windows shut and run aircon. Ps. There are a couple of topics on the issue if you do a search. |

centre box removal reduces this significantly on a 2.4 DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Mine used to get dangerously hot. Since I removed the centre box, it doesn't feel appreciably different to rest of the interior. Completely transformed. |

Air in, gas out is what makes sense for heat dissipation and performance.
As it is such things as the centre silencer is like asking someone to run a marathon with a mask on.. And as if the offset inlet and outlet isn’t mad enough trapping the hot gasses in there, with poor inlet to outlet flow, I expect there is baffles inside as well that get clogged and add even further to the restriction and surface area to pick up and retain, plus radiate even more heat which will also increase EGR upstream I’d have thought too. Has anyone opened one of the silencer boxes? I seem to think they have a kind of perforated baffle inside of them, like a washing machine drum internally kind of thing. Even the rear silencer is restrictive, for a while I went straight through centre but kept the rear. Last year I put a straight through rear as well and runs even better, sound wise is just right I like it where I thought it maybe a bit load a 3” open rear but it isn’t. It sounds better and drives better, not surprising, considering gasses are pushed out easier and with a smooth flow rate, and restrictions or baffles that swirl or deviate exiting gas flow increases heat, and decreases performance. The factory fit is decreasing performance, reduces MPG so makes sense to improve MPG in the process. NEVER SURRENDER! ⛽️🛢️👨🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧 |

I used to suffer from this. Not great with no air conditioning.
Last summer I stripped the front seats, matting, centre seat box panel and plastic gear box tunnel out. I lined footwells, inside and outside the seat boxes, both sides of the lids and the gear box tunnel in front of the plastic removable bit with Dodo Thermo Liner Pro 5mm SE. I refreshed seals on all the lids and also took extra effort to make sure the plastic gearbox tunnel was sitting properly sealed. Our trip to Spain last month in 30+ degree temperatures was a much more pleasurable experience. No issues with open windows. |

I'm not sure if it's related or anything but I recently replaced my fan blower motor and had my A/C system cleaned but used a different shop to do so.
In any case, the A/C was colder now but the air from the vents wasn't as strong as before. I felt some air at the base near the gear lever and thought that maybe some modification to the coil box was not put back but it did help keep the lower area cooler. Not sure if it's coincidence but there seems to be a cut out on the lower left front of the plastic tray (if you don't have a cubby box) that seems to also be in the line of fire of the "escaping" air from the coil box so that may help cool things down. Definitely cooler now than it was before in the cabin. |

Centre box removal is a no brainer, it is also very heavy so another plus for getting rid of it DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |
