What do you mean by Defender 90? New one or traditional one?
If the latter. Every setup is likely bespoke. So there will be no real answers to your questions. As it will vary depending on many many things. Personally if you want air suspension you are probably just better off buying a Range Rover of some kind. The old style air suspension is quite limited as it makes the spring rate stiff and bouncy off road and soft and lots of roll when lowered. The opposite of what you really want. |

L316 - I want the additional drop for access, not concerned about off road ability, would like onroad to be no worse than it currently is at standard ride height.

There are a few routes you can go, up to you.
Manual system with your own buttons/ actuators for leveling or a full kit which can have access modes and adaptive suspension with sensors. Full solutions: https://www.onairsuspension.uk/product-pag...ols-inc-hh https://irbdevelopments.com/suspension-setups/ Opinions: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic84239.html Some have managed to quite robustly use Discovery air bags and create their own system without the cost of ECUs and such - just a thought 4.0 V8 Defender 90 My Instagram |

Smaller tyres and maybe shorter springs could give better access. Tbh you could buy a nice condition p38 RR or Disco3 for less money than fitting a custom setup on a a Defender. Obviously each to their, but it sounds like there are other vehicles that would suit your needs better. |

How much do you need to lower your total vehicle height by? If you’re not bothered about offroadability then lowering springs maybe a more cost effective option.
I have the VB kit through Irb,the thread that mr marsden posted earlier has mine and many others comments about the options already so is worth a read. I have c. 5mm between the axle and bump stop at access height on the rear, which gets my truck on 33’s and with roof bars under my 2m garage door. |

I think Devon 4x4 do an air kit, I thought I saw one a few weeks ago on their page roughly £2.2k mind you.
My concerns are and would be, reliability, airbag failure can be dangerous especially so if under vehicle and unexpectedly blows out. Prone to damage more so than springs, and longevity. But for what you are seeking can understand the interest, and likely have been improved a lot. Do they have some form of protection fitted to them these days? I thought I’ve read about Kevlar before unless I’m just thinking it. You can never believe what you read these days, so take it with a pinch of salt. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

I don’t think there is any risk of them blowing out and certainly not while under a vehicle. The only time this would be a risk would be in a war zone if someone shot an air bag. But tbh air suspension would likely be the least of your worries in such a situation.

Has happened with trucks, there has been drivers killed by a failed airbag where there has been someone crushed between the wheel and body. Often when minor works are computed or changing a wheel or similar, stress cracks, or a sudden blow out of air bag. Not common, as risk is mitigated as much as possible but it does happen.
Mind you a coil spring can break as well, but typically that means the remainder of the broken spring keeps some height. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

The probability of one or more blowing out would be quite small, but when you are underneath rummaging around you could inadvertently disturb an airline or height sensor which can all effect the height.
A RRC, P38 or modified original defender with solid axles gives you some protection. The more modern setups drop very very low. |

VBAir here. Get down to 2.0 with a cage and a rack directly on the cage. From memory it will stay in access height up to 25 mph, there is no super-low-crawl height.
Very nice ride in 'normal' height. A bit solid at max extension. You might hear the compressor running when you are at idle, depending on install location. I have the levelling sensor, too. Where ever one parks, one can always have a flat bed. Not cheap, but I really like it. NG |

Sorry but what's an L316 ? Is it a Defender or a Pretender ?
It's an interesting subject but I don't know if the comments are relative to the vehicle I'm interested in as I don't know which one we're talking about ! Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |
