Aux belt tensioner
Hi
Odd problem, my water pump pulley has shattered! strangely the belt has sufficient tension that i didnt notice and the belt still turns the water pump on the armature without the pulley! No noise nothing. Only noticed when the undercarriage came off and the bits of pulley were in it.


I cant get the pulley on without getting the belt and tensioner off frustratingly which means a new tensioner i guess as well.

Anyone got any experience in this, looks like i can do it throught the bonnet rather than from underneath or taking anything out.

Any advice, pitfalls, drawings, photos workshop manual excerpts all welcome before i get stuck in and am immediately filled with regret as is my usual stance.

Find yourself a workshop manual, digital over 11000 pages.
You can start here for free but it is not complete.
Front side of the Ingenium 4 cyls is the same I believe for Petrol or Diesel

ls yours a 2.0 litre or 3.0 litre? Only because you refer to it as a "D240"
That recall refers to the 3.0 but if it covers yours, you should be able to get it done FOC.

You were lucky not to have any engine damage, although l guess it would have warned you if it started to overheat.

Yeah its the 2 litre diesel (the 240 is the one before they all became mild hybrids) and so recall isnt for mine

Yeah got lucky but had a look and that belt is on tight so its not going anywhere as its kind of held in place by the other pulleys. The risk is thst it doesnt turn the water pump fully.

my eye will be very close on the temp gauge till its fixed!

Sadly not, 3 yr warranty has finished.
I have a private one which covers up to £xx/hr (not JLR rates) dont mindsoing a bit myself though.
Ive had a terrible experience with the main dealer and a private jlr "specialist" so taking it somewhere is a last resort. Its not even the money, its the messing around to actually get it done by someone good.

Succesfully completed (after a trip to halfords for a t55 torx fitting to move the tensioner)

£47 oem pulley
£30 torx set
1x scuffed knuckle and broken thumbnail
Took 15 mins

JLR quoted £1068, unreal

£1,068 good grief, what were they going to replace?

The part was £47 retail, they'd probably replace the belt but what's that, another £50

l bet the "official" workshop manual says remove the radiator. l changed the aux belt and tensioner on my TD5. lt was tight, but do-able. The dealer wanted to remove the radiator and associated parts.

yeah, small wins,
my guess is that they would have replaced the belt, tensioner, and entire water pump. Then its just labour rate, and £180/hr adds up quickly.

I hate to be negative, but the dealer used to be the top drawer service, now it feels like they have all the gear, but that £180 is paying to furnish the dealership, its certainly not going to the person working on my car, they are doing the bare min possible.

My convo went along the lines of...
"for a pulley?
well the pump might be seized"
well I drove it here temp gauge is fine, and it you want to see if its seized, turn the engine on and look
cant do that,
then they got in the car and turned the engine on to pull it round front.......

too busy, not interested in little jobs, need to make them all into something bigger is my guess
I had the same with a parking sensor, according to them it needed a few hundred in diagnostics, then investigation into a wiring loom. £25 on ebay and a bit of messing around with trim to try 2 different sensors and found the faulty one.

I dont know when main dealers just turned into this, and we are all being told we need main dealer service history, when at this point I think Kwik fit are more thorough

I doubt any other brand is is any better to be fair.

You need to find a good independent. There's one round here, LR specialist since the 1950's

They've got all the diagnostic gear, and their labour rate is £60 per hour.
