I went down a similar towbar route when I bought a D3 many years ago. It fitted and worked the lights ok but after approx 30 miles a gearbox overheat light came on.
After many visits to Land Rover dealers it was found out there was no fault with the gearbox but the aftermarket towbar hadn’t been coded in, apparently the car needed to be told it had a towbar fitted so it could alter the gearbox parameters. Don’t know if the Defender would need a similar thing doing.

It doesn’t ’need’ it - despite the hyperbole in previous posts you can fit a towbar fairly simply and it will work fine. But to get the additional features built in to a factory setup the car has to be coded to tell it that there is one fitted.

The Defender also adjusts gearbox shift patterns etc. when a trailer is hooked up, as well as disabling rear parking sensors etc. and the other features already mentioned.

Yep. Mine is after market. No issues whatsoever ever. Same when I fitted tow bars to my D3s and D4s.

Never needed to configure anything. Thumbs Up Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.
