Defender td4 start issue with warm motor
Until this week, while the weather was still a bit colder, my Defender td4 from 2008 would start without issues. However, I noticed that when the motor was still warm, restarting was a bit difficult.

Now that the weather has become warmer, my Defender has difficulties starting. It takes about 10-15 seconds of starting before the motor picks up.

What could be the issue?

Have you a code reader to see if there are any diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) ?

It could be one of many things, VCV , cylinder head temperature sensor, crank sensor , fuel filter, injectors etc.

DTC’s or absence of DTCs helps narrow things down.

No DTC's.

When my garage serviced the Defender back in February, they tried to find the source of the issue, but couldn't find it. They told me that there were no DTC's.

Potentially a VCV then, they do cause all manor of problems on the 2.4 without any DTC’s being triggered. There are a lot of topics on here regarding vcv issues, how to replace them, and that you need to find a genuine source of a genuine Denso VCV.

Hi, maybe you've already solved the problem, but I had a similar one, it wouldn't start randomly, especially when hot. After checking a lot in all corners, the problem was much simpler, a power connector to the starter motor in bad condition. Sometimes it connected and sometimes it didn't. Something frustrating. I hope you solved it.

Hi,
My defender went to the garage in June. I sent this thread to them in advance., They said they checked a lot of things (this thread was useful to focus) and paid also attention to all connectors. After a discussion with the mechanics what it could be, they guessed that it could be the temperature sensor but it could also be the vcv. They advised me to first replace the temp sensor. If it doesn't help, then we replace the vcv.
Besides that, they determined a leak in the airco cooling system, that needs to be taken care of also.

My defender is going back to the garage beginning of September. Good thing is that in between June and now, the defender is starting fluently and didn't fail once. Maybe checking all the connectors did the trick already.
