I disconnected the battery while wiring in a power feed for my new ARB compressor. Double checked everything and reconnected the battery; all good.
The next day I head out on an errand and after a short distance the dashboard lights up like a Jean Michelle Jarre concert! My first thought was that the battery terminal had come loose after bouncing over the numerous potholes. I stopped and checked the terminal and all was tight. Hmmm....
Then I noticed that the Ultra Gauge did not have the display back lit and was just saying "scanning". Looks like it did not like the power cycle. I cycled the power on the Ultra Gauge ensuring the ignition was on so that it could chat to the ECU. The Ultra Gauge now has its familiar readings. I fired up the Defender and continued, all good.
Therefore with the Ultra Gauge in its stuck state it was screwing up the CAN bus and stopping the dash talking to the ECU and ABS controller.
To err is human but to really screw things up use a computer
