4 Bike Carrier fitted to Defender

I have managed to securely fit my 4 bike carrier into the back of my defender onto the towbar with an extension

Probably about 6m total length!

It’s a Thule 4 bike carrier on this towbar extension bought on eBay.

This bike carrier also tilts down and clears the tailgate so I can open it even with 4 bikes on.

The actual towbar extension also tilts which I didn’t need but bought this one rather than the fixed one as I can lock it.

What about the permitted drawbar load of the towbar? Should you keep a close eye on this? The larger lever arm increases the drawbar load - especially when e-bikes are transported.

What do you think about that?

Yes, that's true. The official LR rating says max X kg (100kg I think) with a centre of gravity being only 300mm from the ball. With these extenders on the centre of gravity is approaching 1 metre with a bike rack, obviously depends which slots on a 4 bike carrier you use. But there we go... nothing you can do about it. If I had 4 heavier MTBs on one of those racks I'd want a secondary strap round the spare wheel (Down to the furthest point) to give additional support as a minimum. Fortunately, I only have to carry some v lightweight road bikes haha!

It's an Atara Strada. Yes, excellent. Had it for years, but they are still made. Because it swings back away from the car, you can open the rear door almost the whole way.

I'm looking at modifying my Atera Strada carrier. The one Land rover sell seems to be the same as my old one with the upright bar modified to miss the spare wheel. This looses the capability to carry a bike on the furthest row back, but now our kids have grown up, we only ever carry two bikes. It looks like you can buy the standard straight bar from land rover, but not the modified one. Has anyone found one?

I've posted this before in another thread, but for a while in the early 2000s, LR simply used a US-style square hitch receiver as a removable tow hook option. I purchased our TD6 L322 used with the tow hook already installed - and was delighted. I could finally use all the add-ons fro US hitches rather than trying to balance everything on a little ball, something I have never really been fond of.

Last year we wanted to take our relatively new, relatively heavy e-bikes (my bike weighs 18kg w/o the battery and I have a carbon frame!) with us to Spain to camp / bike off the grid. I looked at all sorts of bike racks that would hold nearly 50kg in bikes and not collapse when we were off-road plus be high enough to not reduce our departure angle to zero. There is an Australian company https://www.isi-carriers.com/index.html and 1UP in the US https://1up-usa.com/product/2-super-duty-double. Shipping estimates were not pleasant, tho.

In the end I ended up finding a hitch mounted cargo basket on Amazon in the EU(!) which had the 2" square steel tube I needed and welding up a frame for parts from our old bike carrier and some new clamps/straps from Fiamma. Rock solid off road and a semi-acceptable departure angle. Last year it was still a bit of a PITA as we had to remove the carrier for camping, so this year I added a Saris swing-out adapter. We just returned from a 3000+km road trip and everything is still solid.

Now I need a US tow bar for the Defender. And, as I posted previously, the electrically deployable hitch will be for sale.

Hi Aquascape,

I am too looking at such a solution. Can you tell me from your experience is there is swinging left-right or drooping slip movement when under load and travelling with the attachment? There does not seem to have any mechanism to prevent this.

The bike carrier doesn't move up or down at all but you can twist it left or right, although this is quite stiff to do so it doesn't turn at all when I am driving.

Probably need to additional ratchet straps from the spare wheel down to the bottom of the bike carrier and strap each side to the tow hooks for better safety/security.

Do we know what is the max nose load on the European electrically deployable tow bar?
