Sump is probably one of the worst places to monitor oil temps IMO as it will be a low average at best…

Yes possibly but it was the easiest way at the time and it does show me figures at least for comparison.
Normal temp is 85-90 degrees c. Pushes 100 under load etc. 2015 90 XS Santorini Black

I've got the 2.2tdci and the oil temp is available as standard on the likes of the torque app.. On a decent run tracelling around 60/70 I'd expect to see 104 to 106 degrees C.. With the coolant fluctuating from 90 to 96, deg..
I fitted a coolant level alarm in the top hose a few months back.. Seems to be doing the job on the odd occasion I've tested it..
Tried to mark it with a yellow mark in attached photo👍
It's an audible alarm and has a led that also flashes when activated.. There is a facility to switch whatever you want when the thing activates, but I've not used that..

I guess that is a D Craig coolant alarm.

Is oil pressure available on the 2.2? I guess on the 2.4 is not. Puma 110" SW

I think its one sensor combining oil level and oil temperature. Thumbs Up 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

That's the name👍... Davies Craig... I couldn't remember it 😩😂

I've only got oil temp to display on the torque app.. As mentioned the sensor does report on oil level but that's not given in the data to display
Oil pressure is not available either, or I've not got it.. Its one gauge I may get round to fitting👍

Some great info appearing on this thread Thumbs Up

By the time the cylinder head sensor winds back your ECU, you will have circa 140-150 'c oil temps. - Low coolant alarm is a must IMHO, could those that have them provide images / info on the system?

Alisport use this sensor in their tank, you need to connect it to a light / buzzer.

https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/float-switc...e&gb=s

The lack of information provided by the Defender dash is woeful, the opportunities for the engine to lunch itself that could be avoided with basic temperature / level info.

Some data, UK Defender, 20'c ambient / air temperature, altitude 200 ft above sea level. 60 mph in 6 gear, flat road, no load in the car, driver only, air con off.

Water / coolant Temperature sits at around 96 - 99'c, with oil temperature at around 105'c.

Fitting a lower temp thermostat (PEL500110) under the same conditions, coolant temp drops to around 88-89'c, however oil temperature stays at around 104'c.

I like the water temperature with a low temp stat, given the rad airflow is blocked by an ac condenser and an intercooler the system seems to do a decent job.

Not so much with the oil temperature, even though the water temperature dropped circa 8 degrees, oil temp dropped 1 degree. As soon as you start adding load, higher ambients and spirited driving the oil temp climbs.

This i feel is due to the engine oil cooler being a very small plate heat exchanger with not enough surface area to bring about the change.

It appears that Defenders in standard trim in non arduous conditions are seeing circa 106 degree oil temps, I would ideally prefer to be around 92 degrees, most agree that 110 is the about as high as you would want to go, there is a reason that most oil stats operate between 82-92 degrees.

I use the "enginesaver.com" type.

140-150C is way above accepted running temperature for engine oil. 107C is about the limit AFAIK.

Probably the only way to go (for a non DPF vehicle) is to switch to M1 Ow40 or the like during summer time. Puma 110" SW

Unsure how much oil goes through the turbo, but guess that must get pretty hot since the turbo is not water cooled. If enough oil is flowing, perhaps a cooler in the turbo drain is not a bad idea. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
