Now isn’t Ron a great Defender - a ‘proper one.’

I hope someone snaps him up and he goes to a good home 👍

Don't believe all the hype around needing a fully 'expedition' prepped truck. You're existing truck will do a trip like that just fine.

We did 75000 miles around namib and kalahari deserts in a series 3 with a couple of jerry cans.

I was based in the middle of the Gobi desert for a year with a bog standard 110 300tdi with no issues.

The more weight and tat you add to the truck, the heavier you are, the more strain on the mechanicals and the more likely to get stuck.

Just look at what the locals use in those environments to see what works.

There are a couple of guys on the.lightweight fb group that head out to North africa every year, most of the time they don't even have their roof or doors on!

Yep, I've done a lot of desert driving out in Saudi in Pathfinders, Land Cruisers and GMC pick ups and for most of the time things go well.

Next year I will be joining in expeditions organised by - https://www.popskis-private-expeditions.com/

This is why I want to source a decent Wolf and equip it as required:

Preparing a Desert-Ready PPE Truck

PPE expedition trucks need to meet the following criteria:

*Be soft top vehicles that can be stripped down easily, or with hard tops that are easily removeable.

*Be in good mechanical condition. If a recent rebuild a minimum of three months regular use prior to departing on an expedition to prove reliability

*Carry a reasonable selection of tools and spares

*Be LIGHT. Overloaded trucks are a liability on our expeditions as the vehicle has to work significantly harder to cross challenging terrain if heavily loaded and increases chances of major breakdowns.

*Be fitted with a CB radio capable of operating on EU AM-band frequencies.

*Carry recovery gear such as sand ladders, tow ropes/straps and shovels.

*Be able to carry enough fuel and water, preferably in jerry cans, for up to seven days of independent travel.

The front half of a million mile non turbo peugeot 405D welded to the back half of a different one. And they'll still get everywhere you will and quicker?

I would take what you have to be honest, it is a well maintained vehicle and is ready to go. (Have you seen how squaddies drive wolfs?) Think hire car or drive it like you stole it, and the maintenance really isn’t as thorough as you think it should be.

If you want to join in with the topless driving just unbolt your hard top and stick a canvas top on. You might try it and decide a canvas top isn’t for you for long journeys across Europe
