Solenoid or starter motor? Non-starting issue.
2.4 TDCi '08

I've not been able to start it for a few days. The instrument panel lights up as it should, but on start there was only a click coming from, I suspect, a start solenoid. Now there's not even a click.

It has had a persistent battery drain for the last dew months, in that the battery drains out over a week or so if not used. Perhaps this is causing something?

I have:

Replaced the battery and re-synced the fob in case it was an immobiliser issue.
Checked all fuses under dash and drivers seat - nothing was blown.
Checked the security and sitting of the various relays
Made sure the battery is fully charged.
Spent hours searching this forum!

Thanks

I suggest to check (-) points to chassis and transfer case. Puma 110" SW

Get a long bar and put it on the starter motor body and give it a tap. See if it starts then. Could be a jammed gear. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Worth checking for parasitic current draw as well, and that can be something from a relay coil constantly energised or water where it shouldnโ€™t be.
The latter here I found water in a few years ago, will cause a monitor current draw, but enough to bring the battery down to low voltage.

Beyond that, maybe a loose ground or battery clamp in particular the main ground the transmission.

A Multimeter maybe useful here.

Good luck. Thumbs Up No Guts, No Glory.

There is a post on how to troubleshoot a drain to earth. https://www.defender2.net/forum/post969511...2C%20there's%20a%20problem.

Finally sorted after needing recovery. It was the starter motor which has been replaced.

Thatโ€™s unfortunate, but at least you know what it is and that it is now solved.
