Has anyone fitted an aircon unit to a car/van/landy with a view to it running when parked to keep dogs from overheating?
A memory of looking at options when we had a van was jogged by that bright yellow thing I saw in the sky today (for the first time in forever!). Definitely have a split charge system, I was hoping (if we went ahead) to incorporate solar into the mix, as it'd only really be an issue on sunny days anyway.
Obviously the safer, cheaper etc alternative would be to leave the doggo at home, or take her with into somewhere, but occasionally it's not always the easiest option. I know it’s not what you are asking about, but many motorhomes are removing a/c as it can’t really be used unless plugged into mains and many are fitting the Maxxfan. These provide a great amount of air movement for the noise and power consumption. I’m very very pleased with mine fitted to my van.

Honestly I'm open to suggestions either way. Right now we actually have an interesting situation. The Yeti (Defender) is really insulated in the back and in the cab, it's all white AND has a roof tent covering a lot of the roof. So in a manner it has it's own shade. We have yet to try the window screens with open vents, and the windows open in hot weather. So it might not actually get super hot anyway. A large part of us buying a motorhome was our dog and the ability to leave him inside a cool vehicle while we did other things.
A motorhome is well insulated compared to a standard Defender and has window blinds. The Maxxfan has been an absolutely fantastic addition to this as it can be set at temperatures to operate, although we don’t bother with that, but also has the ability to draw air in or out. We run ours 90% of the time on out. Crack a few windows open and it draws cool air in and removes the warm air which has risen to ceiling height. Using little power. These units are very popular with the van life brigade who won’t to be subtle and not have loads of windows. The Maxxfan, unlike other types can be used in heavy rain without water entering. You may not have room though under your RTT |

Yeh, would definitely have to measure clearance... also one day we want to fit a pop roof, so that'll be another kettle of fish to navigate

I can’t give an answer re air con but I have the older version of this

I also have the cage fan with helps circulate the air conditioned air through the cage. Admittedly it’s a Discovery 4 these days rather that my old 110 USW I’ve set limits on the app so it pings if it’s gets too hot Last edited by stanley on 18th Jun 2024 9:29pm. This is her currently....approx 2 hours ago.
Had to have an op on her foot - I'm somewhat peeved about the whole thing as I'm not convinced the last month or so she has had her condition taken seriously and now the end result is a partial toe amputation.
