Puma buying advice
I'm going to look at a 2015 2.2 with 113k miles on the clock, can anyone tell me if I'm going to regret it? And what to look out for please? 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

Specific for the 2.2 I would check how frequent the engine oil changes have been undertaken. The more frequent the better due to oil dilution from active DPF regens.

Given approx 12k miles per year I would not expect any DPF issues as I assume most journeys have been a reasonable distance. But worth understanding what distance and speed the majority of journeys have been and if the DPF light has ever came on. Noting on my 2013 2.2 I have never had an amber or red DPF light illuminate.

A 2015 will have DSC so worth checking it’s operation.

As with all Puma’s the intercooler can / will eventually split at the seam, so see if it’s ever been replaced.

The turbo to intercooler hose should be ok as 2.2s had a bracket fitted to stop it rubbing, however the 90 degree elbow between the metal pipe and inlet manifold can hole at the bottom. It’s very hard to see but can be felt from under the vehicle if your hands are not too big.

Alarm ECU (ALM unit) will be ok as it will be the DHxxxxx unit and not suffer the potential ALM CHxxxx brownout issue due to low starter battery voltage.

VCV should be fine as different from the 2.4. I’ve yet to hear of a 2.2VCV issue.

I’ve never regretted purchasing my 2.2, it’s been a good engine. Only parts I’ve had to replace due to a fault is the Intercooler and the EGR.

As above plus a 2.2 is just like any other Defender. Personally I think rust and corrosion could be the biggest issue on a Defender, although being a 2015 should not be too bad. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Have a good look at the windscreen frame for corrosion.

Thanks all, I'm fairly happy with all aspects bar the 2.2 engine and perhaps the MT82.

Re the DSC - what exactly is the function and how could it be tested?

It appears to have been serviced every 12k miles by JLR, is that the normal interval? Seems high?

Anything else to be aware of / look for? I have heard of some failures such as over fuelling, holed pistons etc. but can't recall if that was for the 2.4 or the 2.2. What about timing chains? 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

Check if oil pump has been replaced at all. Then factor in cost of replacement on purchase for piece of mind. Some say the later oil pumps were ok but ask any cautious transit guys and they will replace every 50k at the most.

Hi . If helpful..... I have had my 2015 Puma since new and its covered 95k now. Oil change every 6k and the only engine fault I have had so far is a faulty EGR valve at around 30k. I replaced this but is a long fiddly job. I drive 14k a year and is a daily driver. No issues with DPF lights. I have no oil leaks (yet!) from the engine, gearbox or axles. if you can find a well maintained engine it is likely to help. But good chassis and bodywork is worth the inspection too. 2015 90 XS Santorini Black
