It’s happened again! But which gearbox?
Well it happened again, to add to my list of jobs to do, I’ve picked up a 1967 88”, it has a galv chassis, 200tdi and parabolic springs, wants tidying up but as a base it’s pretty good.
But I believe the gearbox in it is an imposter from a 80” Series one (ex MOD being green) and is a ring pull freewheel gearbox.
Can anyone help confirm my suspicions?
Cheers
Will

That certainly appears to be an early freewheel transfer box. I imagine that it was fitted with the 200TDi because it is (after a fashion) full-time 4WD, at least in the forwards direction. An odd choice, though.

I wonder what is inside the front axle swivels - the freewheel box was only ever used originally with CV (Tracta) joints in the swivels, and not with the later Hooke type UJs. Full-time 4WD with Hooke joints could be less than ideal under some conditions.

Thanks Blackwolf I thought it was a freewheel box, I think it also has (common mod in the day) Range Rover diffs in it as there are no fill points in the differential housing but an added one on the rear axle it also seems very high geared from the little I driven it.
I’ll have to strip a swivel to take a look, I think I’ll be on the look out for a 2A gearbox for it as this has a bearing gone inside it.

Cheers

Actually I’ve just had another look and it has freewheeling hubs on the front so I guess it will be standard U/Js in the swivels.

That makes the choice of transfer box weirder still, a full-time 4WD box and FWH. Fairly irrational!

Perhaps it was the only one available at the time.

Does it actually have the ring-pull lock for the freewheel? The later freewheel boxes had a yellow knob arrangement like the selectable boxes which followed. A complete ring-pull box with the ring-pull may be of interest in the SI community.

It doesn’t have a ring pull as per the series 1’s it has a red cable tie attached to it which come through the floor. Laughing
I think it must have needed a gearbox at some point and this gearbox was available and installed is most likely scenario.
Thanks again

Aha, 21st century ring pull aka cable tie! Rolling with laughter

With a TDi motor I'd suggest a later box with the larger bearings.
