Thrown a curve ball
l've just been offered effectively an as new 2008 Defender 110 TDCi XS Station Wagon with under 5,000 miles on the clock.

l do still love the old Defenders but l also love my 2022 90 Commercial.

lt would be basically a swap, with some money my way but that would be absorbed by the tax bill l would get for selling my 2022 Defender.

The values of old ones must have gone down due to ULEZ or something, certainly the PUMA models. As it's on sale on the dealers website but hasn't been snapped up.

Part of me would take the "as new" old model. But l
need to remember why l changed to the new one. If l did swap, it would be similar financially because l would put around 10,000 miles a year on the Puma and it would soon be worth £10-15,000 less.

l've only had Defender TD5's and have no experience with the Ford engined version. The road tax is higher at £700 and the Puma section of this forum seems to be full of people trying to sort out random faults.

Any thoughts from past owners on here, would you go back to the old version?

Puma is a much nicer place to be than the older version, in my opinion.

The engines have a couple of flaws, but they’re easily sorted.

That said, I wouldn’t like to be in your position in having to choose..

Both have their own pros and cons.

I’d have the Puma as a long term vehicle and not the new Defender out of warranty. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

There’s a reason you moved on from the old Defender, you just need to remember it.

As romantic as it seems, I’d stick with you’re new 90 and enjoy the comfort, functionality and safety it provides. Thumbs Up Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.

I’ve done more thinking on this.

The fact that you’ve even considered the swap tells me that you have ticked the new Defender box off the list and you are missing the old character, possibly?

The Puma is a much better daily than the older models IMO. TDCi engine and gearbox are perfect for a daily and the heaters are fantastic.

Personally, I think I’d do the swap as I think once the warranty ends on the new Defender, you may be thinking of shifting it on anyway?

Prices are definitely on the way down on the new model also. That price retaining through Covid has definitely passed. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Yes most vehicles were at a premium during covid.

The Defender Commercial is still holding its value pretty well, l've been offered £46,000 as a cash sale.
But the best vehicle for that is our 2020 Jimny. £26,500 on Motorway and WBAC. They were only £20,000 new but you can't get them since 2020 when Suzuki stopped importing them to the U.K.

The new Defender was a one-off purchase. The plan was, to keep it until l retire which is 10 years. Mileage would be 80-100,000 by that time.

What's the market going to look like for 50,000 mile pumas in 5 years time?
Probably worse than L663s..

I say, stick.

I’d have to disagree. The classic defenders seem to do well from a depreciating point of view. They are no longer made and good examples becoming harder to get. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

l think that buying a very low mileage "classic" Defender at a premium price and then putting 10,000 miles per year on it will soon reduce the value.

But the value will stabilise at maybe £20,000 if it's been looked after. l've seen nice Puma 110 XS Defenders with 80-100,000 miles or more at around the £20,000 mark.

With the new Defender l think the depreciation will continue and after 15-20 years it will be almost worthless, unless the mileage is very low.

But you can't buy these vehicles on that basis, it really needs to be which one you actually prefer owning/driving.

I spent around £1,000 per year on maintenance/upkeep with my 110 TD5.

The new Defender is a lovely vehicle to drive and has more character than other vehicles l have driven, including the Discovery 4, Discovery Sport and Evoque.
Mine is on the coil springs, which does give it a certain personality in itself.

But l still look at old model Defenders and think "what about another 110"

Sometimes you just have to live “today”

We can’t predict the future including car values.
I’ve gone through all LRs from Series to L663
Ideally I would have kept them all..realistically I couldn’t.
I moved out of a Puma into a L663 commercial and ther is no way I would go back.
It eats miles, it’s comfortable, Mpg35, crazy low road tax and great safety
A really flexible vehicle that hides its commercial status very well.

It’s a no brainer. For sure I could start jiggling all economics but I just get in it and enjoy it everyday

Clemmo Thumbs Up Make today a little better than yesterday but not so good as tomorrow....
Defender 90 HT............Pangea Green
BMW X3 Msport............Carbon Black
Mini Electric................Grey. (wow!)

I agree with BrickBox generally.
The only thing I think the new one might be more suitable for is if you do significant regular long distance motorway miles.
Ultimately the choice is yours, I like the Puma as I think it’s the best blend of modern and classic.
I think the new one is more car like, the Puma more utility.

Personal choice of course and opinion. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

My plan at some point is to have both.

I’m a LR fanboy, wanted one since I was a kid, my first was a Discovery 3 as I just couldn’t live with a Defender as a daily and couldn’t justify having two vehicles. Now though, a few mates have got classic cars, and I’m starting to get the itch. I’d like one and get the roof removed for some summer fun.

Just need to resist the urge to buy another new one, that will be tough. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

From what I read of you, you don't 'buy' vehicles ........... the Dealer Salesman 'sells' them to you.

J77 - I think a lot of us would like more than one, but would we be able to maintain them so regularly? Laughing
If money was no object I’d quite like an American offering, but they are big and a pain to park over here, with our small roads and I think the fuel bill might be a bit high. Wink
Some lovely examples https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?item=226...esuttonltd
Like the F150’s, Caddy Escalade etc.
There is a nice little Bronco there too.
There is a really nice black Hummer H2 I often drive past, near a tyre shop.
They have a great following in the States.
I’m not so keen on Auto though, so that’s quite an issue and one of the reasons I like the 6speed Puma manual.

The prices though. Shocked $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

l did have the thought to have a classic Land Rover as well as the new one.

Series 1's are too expensive but a Series 3 or early coil spring 90 aren't too expensive if you can find a good one.
