I'm hoping someone on here can help me workout if I have got the right seals to convert my 2002 td5 90 from a pick up to a csw.
So I'm not actually sure what year or model the side panels I bought where originally taken off of, but they seem to be a good fit on my pickup with all of the four corners lining up. The sides did come with a rubber seal stuck to the bottom but it was past its best so I pulled it off and bought some new seals from YRM. the seals are different to what was originally on there, they are wider and made from 2 layers of foam, I thought they might be an upgrade. I fitted the new seals but when I go to tighten the corner bolts they only get so far before getting super tight and the seal not seeming to squeeze down much further, when I take a look at the outside there is still a 10mm gap between the side panels and the tub and the foam seal is visible. I don't have anything to compare it to but that doesn't seem right. It does look like there are a couple of different options for seals online so maybe I have bought the wrong one but it doesn't say that these seals are only for specific defender on the YRM website, and I didn't really want to spend the money on the other seals unless I know the ones I have are wrong as they cost around £40 each side. I would appreciate any guidance you can give me. Cheers |

I am assuming you have fitted these seals:
https://yrmit.co.uk/product/side-panel-to-...fender-90/ Never fitted those myself, but side panels lower edge should only be roughly 2mm off the tub capping. I fitted these seals to my 110 as they are thicker it has presented a few problems when i fitted my pop top but nothing that cant be solved. But yes they are thicker than the standard LR ones but a year in and i have had no water ingress through which is nice. 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

Yes that's the ones. I think they are about 40mm thick to start with so they do stick out from the bottom of the panels quite a bit before fitting, it does seem to be too much to squash between the two frames.

How did you get around them being too thick? Have you got a bigger gap around the panels than normal? Or did you just put more bolts in and tighten it down further?

A big gap which doesnt look so bad as i have black capping 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

Yours does look better than I could get mine, I was struggling to get the mid way bolts and plate in so that I'm able to get an equal gap, I have widow cut outs in my panel so they are abit less sturdy. My panels are also green so it shows up more.
I will try and do the same as you have and not worry so much about closing the gap up but just try to get it equal all the way around. And I'll take some pictures when I'm there next. |

So I have managed to get the side panels fixed to the tub, it turned into abit of a nightmare when I first tried to tighten up the bolts as I was going for an equal 8mm gap all around which I nearly had until the last bolt sheered off on the 90° bracket next to the rear door, I then had to undo all the bolts and lift the roof up to get the broken bracket out and a new one in.
On my second attempt I have gone for a 10 mm gap, but I have found that the middle of both panels bow up slightly and trying to tighten up the bracket on the inside only pulls the frame down on the inside of the side panel without closing the gap on the outside, it also puts a bow in the frame. This is the best I could get it but I am worried about how the added height is going the effect the doors and the gap around them, especially on the rear door when I'm trying to get the top hinge bolted in, I'm not sure if there will be enough slack or wether I will need to slightly lower the bolt holes. |
