Just seen that the car doesn’t have a dipstick! Or am I missing something?
How on earth are you supposed to check your oil? Who are these morons that make decisions like this? Rant over Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

The iGUIDE also makes no reference to anything other than a dipstick!

Why do you want to check your oil? You are not supposed to open the bonnet.

Screw driver through the sump.
If nothing comes out, add oil. |

Does the computer tell you exactly how much to top up then?
How does it work. How do you know how much to put in? I’m never likely to own one just interested. |

Dipsticks are so yesterday!
Why have a simple near-foolproof mechanical system which has worked for over 120 years when you can have an overly-complex software-controlled computerised system with near infinite potential for failure? It's called "progress". |

I’m with you on that one Blackwolf,
I’m completely saddened by the lack of good engineering sense that has resulted in the removal of engine oil dipsticks, and the earlier removal of auto transmission dipsticks. I really hated when they stopped using dipsticks on auto box’s. Now for most automatics you have to get the box to the right temperature, monitor that with a diagnostic tool and top up until ATF dribbles from a fill hole. In practice that means you have your hands in tight and very hot spaces with the engine running and then have hot ATF pouring over them while refitting the filler plug !!! |

Mine’s only ever told me the level is ‘OK’. Under ‘Topping up the Oil’ in iGuide it says: ‘For engines with an electronic monitoring system: Add oil, as indicated by the engine oil level indicator messages in the instrument panel’. My previous LR v8 products had this, you could actually read out the calculated volume with the IID tool. Never really liked it though too cumbersome.
My Beemer also has this, which is handy as it warns you when it starts to run low (I had a small leak) before it is too late. but it also has a dipstick. Hurrah! The other problem with not having a dipstick is that when you change the oil you have no means of checking if you are too low or too high, so you have just do it by making sure you know the volume you are putting in. You also never look at your oil ... All of this is irrelevant to most users who never ever open the Bonnet. |
