Well if your near western Hampshire you won't be a million miles from me. It's been a slog currently waiting to heal from an injury so not alot happening at the moment but getting rid of the roller shutters as much as I liked the quirky look of them has been so much better less draughty and less rattly 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

I am western Hampshire, New Forest to be precise. Like you i rather like the look of the roller shutters, but to do the conversion properly i feel they’ll have to go, really reluctant to do it though…and sourcing a decent tub is a challenge, in two minds whether to leave it with the shutters and source a better base vehicle

If your New forest I'm Fordingbridge way small world the internet is! I looked for another tub as my original one was damaged and as you've probably read found a puma utility tub in better condition and then used another tub to rob the van sides from.
If you did want to get rid of them I'd probably go the same way I have done and find another tub or some tub skins cut out enough to cover the existing cut out I went 40mm over to make sure it was strong had loads of area for the Sikaflex to work it's magic and lots of area to run rivets in. Then all you would need is some van sides which come about a bit easier. This was quite easy for me as my was beaten up quite alot I wasn't so worried on paint work but if yours is and probably is nicer would require a bit more prep work. Also worth looking at possibilities of Gullwings there's a few on Instagram that have done this have a look at Roaming puma and Overland panda who have converted over which looks pretty cool. 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day Build thread:https://www.defender2.net/forum/post1024784.html#1024784 |

Not much to report still found a new receiver hitch bumper while buying an exhaust for my daily driver so for £50 I couldn't complain! Also the wife helped me fit it and we managed to get the plastics looking less grey with some boiled linseed oil

I’m on Southampton’s Waterside near Beaulieu, although will go through Fordingbridge tomorrow on my way to Rockbourne for work..
I don’t do instagram, sorry, do you mean they’ve converted the roller shutters to gull wings? Working for the board there is a certain charm in keeping it as intended, especially as it has a galvanised chassis due to accident damage and the body is remarkably straight, i do wonder if the front axle gave out like so many of ours did |

Your lucky there with the galvanised chassis wish mine had one that will save alot of work in the future. I think all the utilities have lived hard lives and some still do though mine probably thinks it's semi retired! 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

Yes on the electricity board they do live a hard life, some linesman look after them, but the better examples used to end up being loan vehicles after they where switched for a new example, so most did get trashed, sadly.

So the last few days have been busy having now mostly healed from breaking a rib at the end of March starting to get some strength back at last. This means we managed to remove the roof off the 110 yesterday Morning

So after building the pop top it's been put through its paces with a first trip down to Devon then a trip up to Northumbria and back home via the lakes which was pretty cool.

So with the initial shake down done and a few things realised it was time to start prepping the defender for our trip to the Pyrenees in September for this week had decided having some shelter would be ideal and I managed to find a second hand tuff trek speed wing 270 degree awning which I made some brackets up and mounted to the Defender.
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge While we went to the lake District we realised it would be very handy to have a down stairs sleeping arrangement incase the weather got bad and we couldn't pop the roof as a night of strong winds and rain had taught us. So I decided to build some boards around our seating arrangements Click image to enlarge I also had decided I'd like some extra water storage and decided I'd like a life saver jerry can to purify water as I have a long term health condition spending time with an upset stomach is incredibly frustrating so got one and a lovely holder of eBay to mount on the side cargo tracking that I added aswell. Click image to enlarge Thinking of possible recovery of sticky situations I am quite fond of a hi lift jack not everyone's cup of tea admittedly but in the right hands very useful and found a good mount for the ORE spare wheel carrier from Foundry 4x4 Click image to enlarge I also thought it would be wise to do a good inspection underneath and check everything over a month in advance as if there was anything untoward I had plenty of time to sort it out. Sure enough found alot of play in the front Diff pinion bearing so replaced the standard front 4 pin with a Ashcroft ATB to match the one in the rear something I have been very pleased with so far!
