The cutover from 10P to 15P engine numbers is very clean for UK vehicles, happening around mid August 2001 builds.
With 4 previous owners, there could be all sorts of history that wasn't passed on. I was always unearthing things on the Defender's i've owned! Does the ECU have a sticker on it with the correct VIN? This is how they came from the factory. If you can show some photos of the head, someone with more knowledge might be able to spot any differences. When you say mid August 2001, do you mean the calendar year or registration period? Mine was built 7th August 2000 as a 2001 model. I think you refer to the calendar year so they'd likely be 2002 models? The only sticker on the ECU is the one shown below. I thought 10p engines had a MSB part number and 15p had NNN? I have a MY2000 defender with a 10p engine, however the ECU has been changed at some point, it is dated 2003 and has the NNN model number on it.

@Jabberwocky, you could be in the same situation as I think I may be in - Not that it's problem, in fact a good thing.
So far as I understand it, at 10P engine compared to 15P: - Same bottom end - Different head - Different injectors - Different ECU 10P ECU has soldered in CPU chip whereas 15P ECU is updatable via OMDB. https://www.instagram.com/roxi_defender90/ |

NNN flashable ECUs can be used on a 10P, but not the other way around (MSBxxxxxx non flashable on 15P) 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

MSB ecu’s were discontinued and superceeded by the NNN ecu. Theres a correct flashable 10p map file to suit the NNN. Chances are the originals failed at some point and been replaced with a NNN ecu. If you’ve got access to a nanocom would be worth checking to see what vin number is stored in the ecu if no sticker on the top.

August 2001 build date, which is the changeover from 2001 to 2002 models. 15P vehicles started being registered in Aug/Sep/Oct 2001 but there were still 10p vehicles being registered at that time. LR Workshop Find a Defender's history and spec: https://defender.lrworkshop.com |

Thanks Will@LRW and LWB97, I think the most likely scenario is the first ECU became toast and the backwards compatible NNN ECU was fitted with a 10P map.
