Defender Puma TDCI 2008 Handbrake
Thanks to all in advance…

Winter now and handbrake lever is going down and releases ok but pops up slightly and brake light comes on (even though brake is off). I have to press down on the handbrake lever until it stays down! Any ideas or do I need a new handbrake cable - as has been suggested???

Cheers all.

Paul

They can get stretched with age, but for now give the brake fluid a little top up even if it’s near the max line. No Guts, No Glory.

Do you not think much of the aftermarket cables?

I've not experienced this problem but knowing how the mechanism works I'd be very surprised if it cannot be rectified simply by adjusting the cable by following the procedure in section 70.35.25 of the WSM.

On my 2009 SWB, I removed the centre exhaust oh what a battle - and stripped the handbrake.
Found the little wedge that the cable pulls on the expand the shoes was split amd knackered.

Fitted a new, cleaned it all up - used coppaslip etc, refitted, adjusted the cable and shoes, now works a treat. 2009 Defender 90 CSW 2.4 TDCI.
Ex Army Mechanic still living the dream.

Fit a disc.. Not sure it's any better as a brake, but it's a lot simpler to look after.. If you can put up with the rattle👍😂😂

Apart from adjusting it once in over 14 years of ownership, my bog-standard drum handbrake hasn't required any maintenance at all. On that basis I would have to dispute that a disc is "simpler to look after" (especially since fitting a disc set-up must be more complicated that twiddling the adjuster on the drum). Laughing

I am not disputing that the disc brake has advantages in some aspects however.

I’ve had the disc setup twice. One a Scorpion Racing one, and one original XBrake. Both of them required no stop fiddling with and couldn’t ever get rid of the rattle. I’m sticking with my drum this time.

But I have had exactly the problem of the OP and it was the cable not releasing. New cable sorted it.

Well I haven't been around defenders long enough to have any firm conclusions but once in 14 years I would say was very good but not representative or the norm👍, but I still think the disc idea is a great bolt on option and still maintain a much simpler and easier kept option than the drum👍😁
And just as effective
So we will have to disagree on that point

They are a far better park brake than the drum, and simple. Just not perfect unfortunately.

That would be my view as well at this point in time, but as I said I've only owned a defender for a couple years.. Two of the first jobs I did were a clutch servo and a disc conversion on the hb..
It did develop the dredded rattle.. Which was identified for me on a off rosd trip by someone who had been down the same road and fitted one.. Fortunately I'm pretty deaf and for whatever reason it didn't bother me 😅, but also rather strangely it's not doing it at present🙄👍😆
