Which bits do you need in particular? If the casing is the important bit, why does it have to be a TDCi unit?

Once I purcahsed a used casing (for a Tdci) from Ashcroft. In very good shape and it was not expensive. Puma 110" SW

Hope no one minds me asking on this thread but it has reminded me that there must be some difference in the transfare box fitted to the later pumas..
I'd done my clutch and reinstalled the two boxes when I was on you tube.. The bloke on there was saying how important it was to make sure certain casing bolts were fitted in the correct holes or the longer bolts could foul the gears and destroy the box.. Well I couldn't say as I'd noticed when I reinstalled the transfare box but did pull the bolts out to check in case I'd dropped a and on mine this wasn't possible.. The casing bolts were all the same length and there was no danger of them fouling the gears.. I checked with a wooden dowel to be 100% certain.. So I'm assuming something changed or they just installed shorter bolts all round.. |

yes I appreciate that but im asking why it wasn't an issue with mine..it was as it came from build...and installing bolts in the wrong holes wasn't an issue.... why was it an issue on some boxes...ie why did they use longer bolts in some holes and risk such a mistake..
it made me think there must be some difference in the boxes or the location of the gears within the box |

Basically the issue are the bolts to attach the front of the transfer case to the gearbox extension. IIRC not all of them are the same length. If that is what you are asking. However, I am not sure for those TCs using a 1.4 ratio gear. Puma 110" SW

There is no difference between boxes in this respect, it is a feature of all LT230s and just one of those things to be careful about.

My thought exactly. AFAIK it is just the shift linkage that is different between the PUMA and pre-PUMA LT230s... Someone teach me if I am wrong about this. |

Thanks for taking the time, and I'm sorry for labouring the point.. Its just the issue caused me to check my bolts weren't going to foul the gears, and in the end I found it would have been impossible for them to do so as long as I used the original bolts, which were all the same length, but obviously awernt on some transfare boxes..
My box is the 1/2.11 ratio.. |

Earlier boxes can have studs and nuts (on the left hand side if you’re looking from the front). If yours has the M8 bolts instead, put too long a bolt in it can push against the gears in the transfer case and wreck the intermediate gear set- normally chips the teeth off the middle gear.
The Tdci box has a different high low selector housing for the clip on ball socket, also has the switch provision in the diff lock housing, older casings won’t. A discovery box from a td5 won’t have the cut out for the speedo drive either. |

All of those can easily be swapped between boxes though. There are also two different shapes of front output housing but again they are interchangeable.

if you are buying a new box then you can pay the excess with the normal providers and dont provide the old one, I am having to do this as I am not in the UK, and shipping my old unit back is going to be more expensive than its worth, Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.
5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details |

Early boxes came wit studs to fit to gearbox.
I have also changed my Puma box to studs too, less chance of stripping the thread in the aluminium case, although even for that there are solutions. I fabricated the studs myself, so it is not possible to screw it too deep into the case. I just plan ahead for when my back and arms cannot handle the weight of the LT230 anymore and have to give work to someone else. The only difference I can note on Puma casings are kind of 3 ribs on top of the case, that were not on earlier cases. I do not know their purpose though, perhaps some stiffening? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |
