My Td5 have developed a worrying ticking noise which has developed over the last couple of weeks. Seems much worse when the engine is cold. Not really that noticable under the bonnet but quite bad from the drivers seat. Seems worse when letting off the revs back to idle. Not really audible when driving just tickover and when revs drop back to idle.
I have whipped the valve cover off just to check and nothing looks to be concerning under there, rocker shaft bolts all tight and nothing obviously loose on the injectors or valves. The harminic damper doesnt look perished at all and there is no chirp when switching off. Oil level is correct and the same 5w30 synthetic oil i have always used in it. The other issue since i got it back on the road is that it is very smokey at idle and a bit of a cloud when revd. Doesnt seem bad when driving and went through MOT without issue. Exhaust tailpipe seems very sooted up for sub 1000 miles and you can see from the photo below, the soot drips on the floor was just the condensation dripping out after 5min idling and a few revs this morning. Click image to enlarge Hard to film smoke but this video shows under normal idle. Admittedly the engine is cold but ambient is about 11degC this morning. Sure it never used to smoke like this before. ?feature=shared Injector balance is showing as good at the same point as that smoke video was filmed: Click image to enlarge Can anyone suggest anything at all please? Cylinder head was a new AMC one less than 1500miles ago and has been on about 3yrs whilst the car was being rebuilt. Thanks Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

Cheers, smoke could possibly be the turbo, there is a bit of shaft play but it still boosts okay (1.3bar).
Dont think its a timing issue as i did the head myself and used timing pins and triple checked the timing afterwards. It could be rings i guess but the bores looked good when i did the head and its only done 140k. When i drove it to the MOT after chassis rebuild there were epic amounts of smoke under acceleration for the first few miles but it soon cleared. Good shout on the compression test. However how do you compression test a TD5 when it only has 4 glow plugs and unit injectors? Cheers Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

Should have also said, taking the lid off my provent, there are obviously fumes but not significant and no real pressure if i cover the oil filler with my hand. If i block the breather with my thumb, its probably about 20secs + before the pressure builds up and my thumb is pushed off. 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread

OK, timing should be fine in that case.
The turbo could still be the cause. Another thought is that it could be a leaking injector and the rattle is a bit of a diesel knock. To compression test you either just have to be satisfied with four cylinder readings or, I think, you can do a compression test by removing the injectors and making an adapter. It may be worth replacing the PCV too, as it can cause issues when stuck. So to update on this, got the timing pins out and checked/reset the cam timing (made no difference), slackened off the injector rockers and reset them all at 1.5turns from full stroke (made no difference), disconnected intercooler to inlet manifold hose to confirm no oil from turbo (it was clean as a whistle and smoke was unchanged with it disconnected).
So took some more drastic action and removed the oil filters and dropped the oil. Inspection of the oil filter revealed a few small metallic fragments (oil was sub 1000miles old) and I was not happy with the appearance of the oil (looked like some possible metallic particles in it even though hardly anything caught in a gauze when filtered). Found a set of injector washers in my spares so decided I would throw in my old injectors just to rule out any injector issues. Managed to get it fired up again but now running on 4cyl at idle and smoking more so suspect one injector is blocked/seized. Still exactly the same ticking noise present though so have resided my self to the fact it is likely a bottom end issue - possibly small end. Replacement engine now on the way. I will strip anything useful off this engine (e.g. the sub 2000mile AMC head and things) and keep bits to potentially rebuild this engine at a later date when we have moved house. What a shame! Is the new engine a rebuild or a good, used unit? Charlie

As we are <2months away from a house move to the other side of the country time/space/money is currently very tight so sadly a rebuild of this engine or rebuilt unit is currently off the cards so a (hopefully) good used unit is the only way.
I have managed to source a complete 15P engine with 20k less miles on it than my current one which I am hoping I can just service, swap my new PAS and water pump onto and use for now. Potentially I would look to either buy a refurbished short block or refurbish one myself and build up a fresh engine to use in a year or so. Will carry out a bit of an autopsy on this one though. From what I’ve heard, sourcing a good, used example is a far safer bet than a rebuild. Apparently, the vast majority of rebuilt Td5s don’t last anywhere near as long. Charlie

Replacement engine now in and running fine. Managed to get the head off the old engine to have a look. Seems i had a melted piston in cyl5!
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge At least means a replacement engine was the right choice. Assuming it was probabaly an injector issue. Cheers Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

Glad to hear you’re sorted. Yes, quite probably a faulty injector to only find one melted piston! Charlie

Could be an injector issue, with the carbon build up in that area it could have created a ‘hot spot’ and then melted the piston crown.
