Motor won't turn over when hot
2009 Defender 2.4 Puma (140k KM), I'm located in the Middle East (Qatar) where day temps are running 40-43 C these days. In cooler weather I've not had problems but now that it is hot here, the car starts fine when the motor is cool but as soon as I drive it for 10-20 minutes and then stop (turn off motor), the car won't start again until the motor cools down 20-30 minutes. To clarify:

- When hot, the motor won't turn over at all, all other electrical lights come on
- The lights don't dim and there is no load on the battery when trying to start when hot
- The temp gauge never goes over the middle position when driving (not uncommon with the Puma)
- Coolant is new, no blockages, and it has twin electric fans on the radiator
- Starter was just rebuilt in the shop as I thought this was the problem but that didn't fix it
- Relays are all fine, connections tight, etc.
- Battery is brand new

To add one more bit, when this happened yesterday after driving, for the first time, the motor did crank over 2 times but it sounded like a dead battery so barely turning over before it stopped. Then after that it gave the usual symptom of no cranking at all.

My LR shop here in Qatar is stumped so any thoughts?

France 2002 Defender 110 Td5 DCPU Chawton White
The Td5 starters are notorious for burning out the contacters I would start there. You can buy new contacts and fit them yourself.

I lived in the Middle East (and Far East) there is no such thing as a decent mechanic in these countries. They employ mainly people from India with no real skill other than to 'make this work again for a while'. I know it's hot and no one works on their own cars there, but bringing your defender to a local place to fix is going to ruin your car.

Next time it doesn’t start, try tow starting it, as that indicates starter only issues, or it’s wiring. Make sure engine earth / negative is good, or try jumper cable from neg to engine block during a hot start.

Oh sorry, your signature said Td5, but your message said Puma. I guess maybe not as straightforward as the Td5 starter..

Fully agree but living in an apartment building with the car in a parking garage where security will stop you if working on your own car makes DIY impossible. So I'm stuck with the garages here but there are some LR only ones.

Can you establish whether the starter motor solenoid is getting a supply when you operate the ign switch..
That would at least give you an indication as to where the issue was...

the ecu has a programe to stop starting when "overheating" which can be triggered just by hot weather. this maybe your issue.

I have no practical experience of extreme heat conditions , but the reading I've done does says there is a degree of built in protection when things like engine coolant temp , oil temp and I think diesel temp become excessive..but you would tend to notice them whilst driving ,as power would be restricted before any shut down, that's why I think it's more likely electrical but brought on by elevated temp..unless of course you have noticed a performance issue ..

Hook up a test light to the solenoid excitement terminal when it is not working. Try starting. Now you know if it is upstream or in the starter itself.
