Can’t help on finding an axle, but 99% sure you’ll need a new prop as the nose of the diff is longer on a salisbury. But, assuming you have a 300tdi with an r380, a late td5 prop should be pretty easily available 👍

Why out of interest? The puma axles are soft compared to the Salisbury I think.

Long story short . . .
It has come to light that Millie's sailsbury axle is not an original one as i thought it was, it seems to be an old sailsbury drum axle converted to disc before my ownership, so i can't put the upgrades on the rear axle, so that's why i'm looking for the above 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. IIRC, some of the early disc salisbury axles were 'converted' at the factory using genuine calliper brackets etc. What upgrades were you hoping to fit?
I have gone down the P38/Wolf type axle route due to better availability of diff upgrades, the downside is that that ring/pinion design is weaker than the Salisbury unless upgraded. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

That is another route to go down with the P38 axle, i have been following Geobloke's thread on the P38 diff
Is the P38 axle a straight swap for my sailsbury axle ? The reason for changing the rear axle is that a while back i thought it was time to renew/upgrade her braking system which is all original with the 400 odd thousand miles they have done, so i bought from LOF, powerspec front and rear brake kits with new disc's and AP calipers with SS pistons. The front went on without a hitch but no matter what, my indy could not get the rear's to fit so after some phone calls to Luke it came to light that Millie's rear axle is not a genuine sailsbury axle. I did contact Luke to make 100% sure that the kit would fit which he said 100% yes. So i have a rear powerspec kit waiting to be installed. 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper. Clayton. |

The defender "P38" Td5/Puma axle is indeed a straight swap (but the rangerover P38 axle won't fit in)
I did the same to my 110 a few years back; salisbury out and Td5/puma type in. As has been mentioned the propshaft needs changing. it's approximately 1 3/4" longer for the P38 diff. With regards to the disc braked salisbury you mentioned, it was a bolt on setup for the later 300Tdi's (the caliper bracket bolted onto the stub axle fixings). Later salisburys (not sure of they were late Tdi's or early Td5's) the caliper brackets were cast into the axle tubes. But it makes it easy to convert a drum axle to disc. I did a write up on LR4x4 some years back on making spacers and using 10 calipers to convert a drum braked axle into discs, but I would imagine now all the proper parts could be bought used for a cheap enough amount not to have to faff about making bits. edit: here it is: https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/11685-drum-...onversion/ |

That is a matter of internet opinion I fear, along the same lines as the 300tdi is a better engine than the TD5 because it doesn't have an ECU. The evidence in the P38 thread on this forum does not backup the conjecture that the P38 is soft at all, in fact the opposite is likely a truer statement. It is also true that the P38 axle/diff is a much much easier combination to maintain than the Salisbury axle/diff, especially for the DIY mechanic and you gain a not insignificant amount of ground clearance under the diff as well. As I have said before, Miffy's P38 axle/diff (the first fitted to the 110) has covered 1/4 million miles of trouble free motoring (unlike the front rover diff) and to put it bluntly she does not spend all of her time on tarmac, far from it. I absolutely trust the P38 axle. |
