I found this while idly surfing the net.
https://stingerelectronics-eu.com/product/...tting-kit/ It's about £850 for the unit plus extra fitting bits as required. |

The screen is 1024 x 600 and only has USB 2.
I'd wait for the next generation. |

What a great idea and less destructive than double din conversion.

Clock gets binned, it seems.
And looks like the vents are just blocked off: -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

I looked at that picture to see the component parts of the kit, plus the pics (at several angles ) of it fitted. However none show how the vents and clock are dealt with.
Looking at the stinger website they do seem a large company that have this standard head unit and have developed bespoke fitting kits for several vehicles, the latest being our 316 defenders. For several of the other vehicles they have fitting instructions but unfortunately not one for the defender as yet. And as for price, it seems to retail at £999 ! Hopefully fitting instructions will become available and the price will reduce, or someone comes up with a copycat trim that can take any head unit from any manufacturer. |

I’ve used one of these in a mates Jeep, it’s a clever piece of kit. Apart from all the usual entertainment stuff it had 4 cameras and was also connected to OBD for live values, plus you could control the windows, aircon, lights etc on the head unit. I’m not sure what use most of it would be in a Defender but it was pretty cool. WARNING.

Not seen one, I was discussing a system like this with a Stinger agent / engineer in the US a few years ago, when they were looking into it. They said then that there was something in the pipeline.
They are common in the Jeep community and much more common in the US. The HDMI is interesting, it’s the one thing my Pioneer AVH 7200DAB doesn’t have. The Defender physical switching i.e. hazard light switch etc not being covered is also a bonus. There appears to be a link lead for the IPAC there as well as OBD2. I expect the clock is replaced electronically on screen in that area and dash centre vents either blocked off or exit vertically behind the screen. *Later edited* Vents appear to be blocked off. Though this is just my thoughts. The price is going to be hard to justify though! Last edited by custom90 on 29th Jan 2024 8:45pm. Edited 2 times in total |

1) Installation Instructions: http://stingerelectronics-eu.com/wp-conten...-Guide.pdf
2) User guide: http://stingerelectronics-eu.com/wp-conten...22-WEB.pdf 3) Fitting guide: http://stingerelectronics-eu.com/wp-conten...22-WEB.pdf Links are PDF files, containing more closer details. It seems it is compatible with 1DIN or 2DIN installations, perhaps with different fitting kit for each. I haven't really taken a look yet. I do agree, that a 2nd gen often is released not long after mind you. (Often with little fixes, or even better features). I’m very happy with my Pioneer, but as always curious to see how anyone gets on with this one. Last edited by custom90 on 29th Jan 2024 8:46pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Thanks for the links Steve
Looking at the mud stuff site gives some additional useful info https://www.mudstuff.co.uk/products/stinge...1789808725 and answers my question on vents and clock :- ”What happens to the air vents located either side of the clock on the original dashboard?” “A trade-off for the larger screen is you lose the air vents (and the clock) on top of the exiting fascia. The HEIGH10 screen has a clock displayed in the corner of the screen whenever the unit is turned on and when we tested the prototype unit in 30+ temperatures in central Spain, there was no noticeable lack of air-con effectiveness.” Re if you have already gone the double din route, ”I've already fitted a double DIN fascia to my Tdci Defender. What do I do with the side cheek panel which currently houses my relocated switches?” ”The beauty of the Heigh10 fascia is that you can re-position all your original switches back into the centre of the dash. That will then free up space in your aftermarket 'side cheek' panel to fit 6 additional switches (the hazard hole can be blanked off using our Hazard blank). We offer a range of genuine style switches, USB sockets and blanks which are all compatible with the Tdci switch holes, so you can fit them to the Heigh10 fascia or your now defunct switch relocation panel.” Although I think it looks really good and has lots of great functions, £999 is way too expensive for me, and unfortunately adds yet another reason for thieves to target vehicles with it fitted. |

Price will likely come down, considering the cost of dash panels I guess it is not surprising.
I think a bespoke security system and or fixings, would be ideal, but the issue is it’s very on display due to its nature and height to those that shouldn’t be looking.. As you rightfully mentioned. I could understand up to £800 possibly £850 max, which even that is incredibly expensive but above that level. I’m not a fan of removable fascia’s either, though on many units you can’t do anything about where it is fitted or not but I think it’s a point of failure. In particular in a Defender with high vibration levels. Password or passcode entry would be better I think. An in-dash iPad works, but the trouble is yes it’s easily removable but there are so many different updates and generations it wot be up to date for a year ago. So the tech is updating and changing faster than the fittings fitted. It is packed with features though, which is very good, I just think the price point is OTT. |
