Just a little update regarding the noise I was hearing from the rear axle.

The best way I can describe the sound was a knock with a springy twang to it when reversing and initially pulling away, very intermittent

Nothing like the A frame balljoint, but it certainly sounded diff related.

Yesterday I undone the rear diff pinion flange bolt, and once it was initially slackened the pinion flange was already loose on the splines.

I would've expected a little more resistance on the splined shaft.

Removed the bolt and the pinion flange just slide off with no effort whatsoever.

Cleaned the splines fully (only had the smallest amount of loctite in one area?).

Refitted with Loctite 660 on the splines and normal loctite on the bolt (I forgot to order a new bolt).

Torqued the bolt back up and since yesterday, I've done enough miles and stop start driving that the noise would've been heard by now.
Fingers crossed its cured as I've not heard a dickie bird!

So in theory I've removed another point of slack, but I wouldn't have thought this would've been noticble as it was minimal, however it feels better to drive yet again.

Hopefully this may prove useful for others, especially as it's a cheap fix, trial of elimination.

Just for the record, it was Dave from Ashcroft who mentioned the pinion flange when I ordered his output shaft kit.
