Clutch - Feels funny?
Hi all

Just back from picking up a takeaway in Ron. Haven’t driven him for a week but noticed that that the clutch feels funny?

The pedal now feels as if it has two stages. I can press it halfway down as if it is just being held on the spring before you can feel it actually engage the clutch. Going through the gears is no problem, no slipping, graunching or struggling to get into gear, but definitely feels different to the last time I drove him?

Any ideas? Does the clutch need bleeding?

As a first step bleed the fluid if it has not been done for a while. Check for leaks. Check the adjustment nuts have not moved. Check your pedal spring has not broken.

Check the master cylinder reservoir and top it up. If it is really low you have likely sucked in some air. Once topped up it should self bleed after a few used as any air will still be at the M/C or close to it. You should only need to re-bleed the system if air has made it's way to the lower pipework or into the slave cylinder.

Mine has recently started to do the same as this. I hadn't checked the clutch fluid after buying the car, but expect it hasn't been changed since manufacture in 1995. It was low so topped it up. Perhaps slight improvement. I intend to bleed it this weekend if I have time between rain, if that doesn't help I'll replace the slave and master, which are quite cheap.

Would be interested to hear what bleeding does to help yours.

Hi Tom

I drained the system and flushed it through. Even though I previously syringed out the out clutch fluid last year and topped it up with fresh the drained fluid was still as black as used oil.

When refilling I just used the gravity bleed technique which worked really well. I have only driven "Ron" a couple of times since but the clutch pedal feels as if its back to normal. Not sure if the fluid was black due to the deterioration of the seals in the system but if I have any further problems I will replace the master and slave cylinders.
