Oil leak / 110 2.4
Hi, I'm back since fixing (I hope) a clutch issue (https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic88929.html). New problem:

Context
LHD, 2008 Puma 2.4. Clutch switched for LOF power spec at garage about 6 weeks ago.

Symptom
Since then, have noticed a few drops of oil collecting on ground, usually (but not always) after driving more than 5 minutes. Drops seem to stop later, but it's hard to tell.

Analysis
Photos included which seem to indicate engine oil leak, but I'm consider myself a novice so would love to be corrected. Garage checked and said they'd need to take it in for a while and really dig in. They also say unrelated to clutch swap. I've checked engine oil and level is fine (colour is a bit dark so I will swap oil soon anyway).

Questions
Could this be something else? If it's the engine, where should I start looking? Is this the most likely cause of black smoke when accelerating from cold-ish (this smoke is new and I'm guessing it's oil heating up)?

Any help welcome.

After a Clutch change there is often a possible leak from the back of the casing where the seal has not been replaced as per the LR instructions - the use of some sealant is required in specific locations on the gasket before replacing the casing ... see here -

Always love these super fast responses! Thanks.
Of course, I should have actually included the pictures:

Given these it would seem to be forward of the clutch and therefore not a clutch seal issue. Am I correct? If it is that seal, the interesting question is – how do I convince the garage that it's their fault, so they fix it free of charge? I want them on my side as they're the only LR garage in range for me.

Did the garage change the rear crank seal while they were doing the clutch?

Can have a look at this thread, it details the pain another forum member went through because the garage did not follow the assembly instructions: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic78124-15.html 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

^^^^

that is exactly what I am on about - that happend to me and the leak was in the same place as your photos - which was cured with the right placement of sealant ...

As the garage to confirm that they used the exact procedure that Landrover had specified when rebuilding the casings

As already mentioned, this is either a defective/incorrectly placed and installed crankshaft seal, or increased pressure in the crankcase (blow by) causing the oil loss. The latter could be measured. My guess, however, is that the crankshaft seal was installed incorrectly. Unfortunately, I have exactly the same problem, but before and after installing the clutch.

I replaced my clutch a couple months ago and did the crankshaft oil seal at the same time..
I got an engine oil leak almost immediately it was back on the road... So I've obviously made an ass of installing it🙄😞..
So I've got it all to do again when I can get some space in the young ones unit... Cause I don't fancy doing it all in the back lane again..
And to make matters worse I think the gearbox output or transfare input seal is also dropping a bit oil😪.. The joys.. Ehh

Thanks -- this is super helpful.
I'm not sure what the garage did (need to figure out what the crankshaft seal is in French first Smile but will keep you posted!

I had the same issue when i had a LOF clutch fit. I told the garage to change the crank seal whilst they are in there. I believe they fit a britpart seal first which i noticed was leaking when i got home. I took it back and asked them to put a genuine seal in, also mentioned that others had issued with this and sealant was needed in a specific place. They told me that putting sealant in was a bodge job and refused to do it, then fit a different brand seal (wouldn’t tell me the brand). What did i find when i got home? Still leaking…
I took it back for attempt 3 and insisted on a genuine seal and the leak has stopped, no sealant on it either as they refused!
