Utility side Vs station wagon for seat belts - pumas
Hi all. I’m on the look out for an xs station wagon - but also looking at Utilities I can convert to add 3rd row seats (for the mother in law) my question for anyone with utility wagon is do they have the seat belt brackets on the sides (behind the trim) or would I need to replace the sides with station wagon sides? No, there are no brackets in place in a USW:

There's no reason why they couldn't be added but travelling in the back as a van wouldn't be a wonderful experience. Darren

Incidentally, the brackets to support the seats under the tub are in place as I think they only made the one tub variant whether for a SW, USW or DCPU. Darren

Yes, they’re a good option.

“The brackets are very heavy duty and are the only brackets we recommend when used with forward facing rear seats, if you want to truly create a heavy duty mounting point.

The brackets fit straight into a hard top and locate into (normally) pre-existing points and we recommend you only use locking nuts and bolts for instillation.” 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Yes.

I think what you need to inform VOSA - who may or may not want to inspect - and then get V5 changed.

But the truth is it’s probably simpler buy a station wagon!

Would be interested to hear from anyone who’s done it…

Regulations regarding converting a van to carry passengers in the rear

There are no specific regulations covering the conversion of vans into passenger carrying vehicles. However, Regulation 100 of The Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986 (SI 1986 No. 1078) will apply. This requires:

a motor vehicle, and all its parts and accessories
the number of passengers carried, and the manner in which any passengers are carried in or on a vehicle
the weight, distribution, packing and adjustment of the load of a vehicle
to be at all times such that no danger is caused, or is likely to be caused, to any person in or on a vehicle or on a road. This means that the conversion work must allow passengers to be carried safely.

Additional seats should be fitted securely so that they are likely to remain in place in the event of an accident. We recommend that you seek the advice of a reputable garage or vehicle converter.

Unless you buy an early Puma USW that’s classed as a 7 seater station wagon in the first place. With an M1 log book registration. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

I do like the way the UK regulations looks at people changing things on their cars. There is a practical approach. In most EU countries there is the type approval process snd that's it. It it wasn't installed in the factory it's not allowed.

People making things in their shed is a form of creativity that should not be discouraged.

On the other hand you have the UK insurance industry which seem to make up for any freedom granted by the law.
