Silicone Hoses
Apart from the striking colour, what are the advantages of silicone hoses? Just strength? Thanks

Resilience to splitting or getting a hole rubbed in them from adjacent metalwork, if used as air intake hose they stay ridged when under pressure and maintain airflow plus Improve airflow as generally smoother internal bore

The main reason for me is they just looked nice๐Ÿ˜Ž.. But as said above they are robust and should last you forever..
I think the lads on another forum are getting sick of my pictures so I'll try here ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜‚

First time iโ€™ve encountered a silicon hose fetish...but then again Iโ€™ve lived a sheltered life Andy Very Happy

Ps. Looks like a couple of extra wires to your MAF...what are they for ?

Lol.. You arnt the first to mention the fetish, but you said yourself silicone is has certain advantages over rubber๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜‚

The additional wires that I have coming off a number of the sensors, are taken off the signal wires on the sensors and the idea is to be able to connect a scope to them remotely from the cab while the vehicle is been driven normally..or just to test the sensor by plugging in rather than any further probing..
On the mass air flow sensor there is also a temp sensor..๐Ÿ‘
It's a work in progress project for when I have nothing better to do...

Now here is a good idea, blue for air related hoses and red / orange for coolant related hoses. Thumbs Up

I was originally planning on all black but upon seeing this, I may go this route as you can now tell which hose does / contains what. An idiot proofing of sorts as I can, depending on who you ask, be quite the idiot sometimes Mr. Green Rolling with laughter

Look fwd to seeing your pictures when you get done๐Ÿ‘..
You can at at extra cost get some really way out colours๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜‚..
If you are doing the job yourself, I'd recommend taking the hoses off gradually or one at a time, making sure you have it's match in a silicone one from the kit.. If you just strip all your hoses off it could prove time consuming figuring out what goes where when rebuilding.. ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ‘

I'd question if they are really any stronger or resistant to rubbing. Also smoother inside does not automatically mean better flowing, as there is a thing called boundary layer, think of the dimples on a golf ball.

The easiest thing is low volume manufacturing, as it is easy to make different shapes and sizes from.

Silicon is porous and shouldn't be used for liquids.

The silicon air intake hoses I have from BAS are 5 ply, others Iโ€™ve seen are 4 ply. In both cases the wall thickness is significantly greater than the standard hoses and the silicon hose is far more ridged.
For these reasons they are stronger and it will take a lot more to rub a hole in them.

As for engineering the inside of short air intake hoses with bends in them based on boundary layer effects. In theory you could spend a huge amount of time and effort in engineering each specific hose , developing a manufacturing technique and then manufacturing each hose. However I suspect it would provide minuscule benefits in our applications and the price would be prohibitive. perhaps thatโ€™s why they are not available yet and smooth bore silicon ones are ?

As Ian says the silicone air intake hose compared to the rubber that came off.. Just no comparison.. The rubber one had a metal wire wrap.. But felt flimsy in comparison to the replacement silicone..
I've read plenty about the rubber intercooler hoses splitting but have yet to read about a silicone one failing..
The water hoses are similar in feel..a thicker walled more rigid hose altogether..
And don't forget... So much better looking๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚..
At least when I look down the inlet manifold side of my engine now it's a bit lighter, I can see what's what.. Before it just looked like a jumble.. ๐Ÿ‘

The PO fitted a bunch of silicone hoses on my Td5 (AllMakes I believe). Seem to be holding well, but the turbo hoses and the breather hose are very sweaty with oil, can't recall my previous factory Td5 had that.
