2.2 Blow by and oil spray?
So I am shopping around for a 2014ish defender to buy. One with 70K when popping the oil filler cap sprayed quite a lot of oil. (bonnet and left hand wing) The 2nd with 120k hardly sprayed any oil but did have air flowing out like the first. Is this normal for all? Do they all spray oil or hardly any like the 2nd? I have watched a few videos of tail tale chuffing with the injector seals and neither did this. Thanks

The proper way is to check the hose out of the pcv that goes into the air intake. Puma 110" SW

It can be a sign of engine wear but it is most often leaking injector seals. Some air release is normal. Lots? Nope.

I have seen both 2.4 and 2.2 TDCi engines, new and used, blowing a lot of air and oil droplets through the filler hole. Under load, rings expand and better seal the combustion chamber.

The best way to asses the health of the engine is via compression/leak down tests. Puma 110" SW

Both seem to run OK. Was surprised at how much oil came out of lower milage one. Also surprised about how much air you could feel with hand although it a lot of air from fan. Both had no fault codes. Only drove one and it was fine. Will have a look at another and compare.

Was getting rid of a bit of Sahara sand from the top of my engine today 🫣🤣and while cleaning up and generally checking i removed the oil filler cap..
There was a healthy splash of oil. i see that as a good healthy supply of oil splashing around..it just gets carried by the air..
The cap itself just sits and pulses up and down if its free and sitting on the fill ..if you cover the hole with your hand it's a pretty neutral effect you feel.. positive and negative pulses... which sort of ties in with a trace I took with a tube down the dipstick hole which would ve direct crankcase..
All this just at tickover..ie 800rpm..

If i remember I'll get a trace of the oil filler and engine breather for comparison..👍

I'm not sure when I'll get rid of the red dust in the engine compartment🤔🫣🤣

While a petrol engine uses the engine 'vacuum' to create a negative crankcase pressure, on a diesel you don't have that negative pressure available so there is always a positive pressure which is bled off into the air intake (pre-turbo). In addition the combustion chamber pressure / airfill is much higher resulting in more blow-by past the piston rings

Obviously as the engine ages the blow-by will increase so it is relevant observation, but not really comparable with the old Cortina.

That is nice!

Would you check it at different rpms? and under load? Whistle

I'll give the load testing a miss..that takes a little more setting up..😁
But here are traces of the gauge pressure through the oil filler cap , engine breather hose, and the dipstick tube..I've given the engine a quick blip of the accelerator in all the examples..
And the pressures are in milli bar down the left..
The time base is 100ms/division..ie 1 sec across the screen..👍
I left the breather hose connected while doing the oil filler and dip tube traces
Enjoy🤣
