I’d also do the fuel pressure regulator on the side of the engine, and check the ecu for oil and do the ecu loom while you there with the sealed one from pace automotive
I wouldn’t like to speculate but it could also be cracked head along the fuel galleries |

Ok, so the hard starting and priming issue is fuel emptying from the injector rail. This can be caused, as Lord Haggis says by a faulty fuel pressure regulator. It can also be caused by corrosion around the ports of the fuel filter housing or the one-way valve inside the port becoming faulty. If you have a look at the last few pages of the Miffy workshop thread you will see the sort of corrosion I am referring to.
The white smoke at final start up is likely unburnt diesel due to the fuel rail not pressurising properly. Does the smoke smell? When Miffy did this the white smoke was quite pungent. Because of the fuelling issue I doubt it this, but white smoke on a cold start up could also be due to partial combustion of the diesel which could be because sticky or worn piston rings. When the engine is up to temperature the piston rings seal better and the engine starts easier and no white smoke. But, I suspect your problem is more to do with a fuel system air leak... |

A sealed injector loom.. Need to try them out. I normally just change regularly with whatever Britpart or something, not expensive. For the OP no need to buy a new rocker cover gasket, unless of course it is leaking. Gasket is rubber and can be reused. Unplug the ECU, there will likely be oil and clean with brake cleaner (gently and maybe a few times till clear). My money is on the fuel system as said though |

TexasRover. The next injector loom you buy pop the top cap off the connector and fill it with instant gasket = Loom for life. Miffy's is now 6 years sold and still going strong. Truly excellent, simple and cheap modification every TD5 owner should do.

before you spend any more gt it plugged in. you can see if you have a faulty injector this way.
keep an eye on the oil level in case its going up. assuming you have air getting in then you should start at the easy stuff. fuel filter head is it cracked? common fault. fpr doesn't normally cause bad starting like you have. when you did the injector seals did you check the seats were ok? was there any sign of blowback on them when they were removed? |

Thanks for the advice!
The seats looked ok, couldn’t see any cracks or blowback. I’ve not got any fuel passing into the sump either. I originally thought it may just be injector / mileage related and had spoken to a local LR garage about sending it in for diagnostics. They said that unless there’s a warning light showing on the dash the diagnostic machine wouldn’t pick up an injector fault - does this sound about right? I’ll take a look into the Fuel filter housing and will also remove the ECU to check for oil at the terminals. Failing that I’ll move onto the regulator. Any reasonably priced low mileage TD5 engines around?? |

depends on what diagnostics they have but you can watch live readings across the injectors and it shows the ones out of balance for example. fairly good guide
either way i wouldn't be driving it if poss until you find the issue |
