My disco/defender hybrid farm truck build!
Just a quick look at the truck I am building (almost finished now I guess). Not taken many pics sorry.

Started out as a boggo 200 tdi Disco bought back in 2003

Around 2008 the rot had set in so decision made to turn it into a tray back for some competitions we were doing around then

used for a few years but then the scene died down and the poor truck has sat idle for m any a year, just being used to winch a tree down or to pull a fence tight. The engine and running gear (Nissan axles) were still sound but the body work was about shot and the trayback made it pretty impractical for just about anything other than competition use. Decision made to remove disco body and fabricate a defender-type ute/tipper which would be far more use around the farm.

Updates to follow

Got to work stripping down to a rolling chassis

Then went on to mount a defender bulkhead (cheap Ebay purchase) utilising the outriggers I had made for the cage mounts on the old Disco

One of the key issues with the build was to get a load are on the back as long as possible without creating a big rear overhang that would compromise off-road ability and look goping! Given the shorter wheelbase of a Disco coupled with the height you need to make the rear deck to maintain articulation, this is actually quite difficult. With that in mind I located the bulkhead a few inches further forward and maybe an inch lower than is standard on a defender. As it happened this helped with attaching the steering linkage so all good. Have played around with articulation on full lock and there is no wheel to bulkhead contact with 33's.

Moving on cut out the gearbox tunnel from the old disco and made a mating flange to join it to the Defender bulkhead and a new floor frame that linked into the disco rock sliders/chassis. I used the disco seats on modified frames but want to change them for something better ASAP.

The rear loadbed was fabricated and I have made it a tipper using the rear winch and a bit of physics. It works really well.

So getting somewhere now. Roll cage fabricated from scratch and a set of wing bars fitted that I had in the shed for years. Also boarded out the load-bed.

So, last pics. Up to date now. Have painted most of it now (Massey Ferguson colours as I had it in shed!). I have fitted some led lights and managed to fit a used bikini hood as a roof. Was very happy with how it integrated with the roll hoops without any forwards planning! Looks like it was designed to fit. A few small jobs to finish now like the tailgate needs completing and I need to wire in the lights and wipers, but otherwise it is good to go and considerably more useful than it was. Oh yeah, and I may well invest in some proper tractor tread tyres for winter but that will represent a fair outlay so hanging back for now.

Thanks for looking

That was a few years ago! Had to do a complete flywheel change as it had cooked the old one. Not sure this weekend but I am hoping to pop up for at least an evening

Looks great and very useable, Pikey. Would love to know what it weighs in the end

Very useable. Got quite a few customers digging old land rovers out the shed now as the cost of gators is silly and maintenance on them is high.
