I think that it depends on what else you have fitted e.g. raised air intake, side window grills, exped roof rack, side light protectors etc.
Personally I'm not a great fan of of them and don't think that they offer that much protection but it all depends on the look you are wanting to achieve for your defender. Jim |

There are also aftermarket front light guards that screw through the headlamp finisher. At least if you want to remove them, just replace the finisher, and the holes will not be visible. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

If you have standard halogen bulbs and drive through wet muddy puddles (Salisbury Plain for example), the mud will bake to the lenses.
With guards it makes it harder to clean the lights. |

I'm not the biggest fan of the air-con grille... Light gaurds just make the front look a little more integrated

Cleaning the headlights, or just the front is a complete PITA with them fitted.

I like them on the rear, can save a lens if you're manoeuvring in tight spots. Never had them on the front, the bumper sticks out and you'll hit something with that first before doing a light. Dirty Deeds - Done Dirt Cheap

We have them on Henry the 110, as said it’s a pain to clean the headlights but also protects our Nolden gen 2 headlights from rocks / branches & birds here in Africa.
