Do you have a double din conversion or are you just looking at replacing the single din cd radio?
Single din, you may struggle getting Apple Play without one that has a fold out screen, and that will be quite expensive (compared to a standard single din). I'm not sure whether my don't want to pay the earth is the same as your don't want to pay the earth? 
Most Defender sound quality is abysmal without spending a bit on amplifiers and new speakers so I would suggest anything would do. Mud do a few alternatives. I was meaning to replace my standard Alpine CD Radio with a Mechless Alpine single Din (only because my LCD display is temperamental). I was going to go DAB, but I listen to so little Radio these days, it just didn't seem worth it. Hope that helps. |

I'll be removing a JVC KD-X561 in the next couple of days. Nice slimline single DIN with a small screen for a reverse camera, DAB and Bluetooth.
