United Kingdom 2014 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Aintree Green
Coming back to the fold - help/advice request
Good day All,

A few different topics here but they all sort of tie together and wanted to avoid multiple threads.

It's been quite a few years since I was last here. It was back in 2017 had a 14 plate Defender 90 XS in Aintree Green which was an absolute joy to drive and own. There were some green lane tours taken, exploring etc. However, I had an inch to scratch where Porsche was concerned and sold it after having it for just over 2 years.

Fast forward, said itch was scratched and enjoyed but now find myself looking at Defenders again.

In particular I am looking at various 90 Adventure editions. Depending on the colour, the price isn't that far off a well equipped XS and some are less than a lower mileage Landmark. Add in the 150ps, I am told a more HD clutch and leather bits, well it seems like a good fit for me.

There are two I am looking at specifically, one is white with 40,000 miles and an orange one with 13,000 miles. From what I can see the lower the mileage the more one pays but was a bit shocked to see what a premium an orange variant has. More so as I love that colour hehe.

With that said, I found the following Adventures
1. White with 40,000 miles - £41,900
2. Orange with 13,000 miles - £54,000
3. Sold an hour before I called , White with 20,000 miles - £46,000

The above are the advertised asking price.

All Adventures in orange look to have a strong premium but I am not sure if these are optimistic retailer pricing or are they truly that much more 'special'?

These are not exactly new and 40,000 miles on a normal car seems low but should I be put off with that on a Puma at this price?

Both vehicles are at least 2 hours away from me and it's not easy for me to just pop over to have a look, hence asking for a bit of guidance on what is realistic from a buying price etc. I'd be happy to post the ads with the hope someone is close by to have a look.

Many thanks,

Perry

France 2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Stornoway Grey
*I am not an expert* but...

Before buying my first Defender (I had a Series 2 a long time ago) I did extensive research across Europe. I looked at RHD vs LHD, 300/TD5/Puma etc, and loads of different specs, added mileage, pricing, maintenance and loads of other data in a spreadsheet and cranked some numbers.

I found that, on average, the 'specials' like Adventure, Arctic, Trophy and so on are not worth the extra cost for me. Compared with other vehicles (same age, engine, general wear and tear), the mark-up was ~25%.

The 'specials' are –if you'll excuse the crass generalisation– for the Notting Hill/Chipping Norton crowd. More importantly, because 'those people' tend to buy the special editions, and generally are not really interested in caring for their vehicles, those cars tend to have suffered a bunch. I saw huge markups and snazzy features (extra wide tyres, floodlighting LED strips above the windscreen, snorkels raised air intakes etc etc) that drew attention away from heavy corrosion, worn brakes, misaligned axles, busted fuel pumps ... the list goes on.

Lipstick on something that has been treated like a pig, unfortunately.

Thank you for the input ibsley, all very much appreciated.

I got to see an Adventure that I was really keen on but upon actual inspection, I was a bit put off on how much was wrong with it, cosmetically that is. A lot of bubbling on various parts, keep scrape marks bottom of the door opening etc. All of it can of course be corrected but as you stated, these come at a premium and I would have thought more care would be had. VERY low mileage examples are going for even more!

I've since found an Aintree Green XS , 65 reg, so towards the last of the line with very low miles and 1 owner which I hope to go view tomorrow afternoon. It's a basic spec but from the info I have at hand thus far, it looks to be a very well taken care of an unmolested example. A clean slate as they say.

Fingers crossed.
