Back from Namibia
Just back in from 18 days out in Namibia visiting a lot of the old haunts and some new ones.
We rented 2 (almost brand new) Ford Ranger Double Cabs which performed impeccably on all of the terrain we threw at them. We started in Swakpmund and got all of the adrenaline stuff out of the way.
Had a great trip down to Sandwich Harbour at high tide (in someone elses vehicle!!)

On the cross country days through Damaraland and the Kaokaland, we didn't see a single other vehicle!

How things have changed from a Landrover perspective though. We saw more defenders parked outside the valet parking on arrival back at Heathrow this morning than we saw in the whole of Namibia!!

I agree! It's great being out and not seeing another vehicle Smile
I used to work out there, primarily in Damaraland and the Kaokoveld. Was great taking the kids back to see it all, they actually got to drive a lot of it Whistle

Hi Shane,
The majority of the cost of this trip for the 2 of us and the kids was actually the flights!

Other major costs:

4x4 Hire. We rented a fully kitted out Ford Ranger with 2 roof tents and full camping equipment for around £2k or 16 days.

The favourable exchange rate (pegged to the SA Rand at roughly 23:1) means in country costs are reasonable as long as you don't go to luxury lodges!

Fuel is around 90p a litre and food is cheaper than the UK.

If staying on campsites work on £10-20 a night pp, a bit more if you're staying in Etosha when you include the park fees but not exorbitant.

I lived and worked out there so planned the route and rough stopping points so no need for a guide.
We had 2 vehicles which meant we could get a bit further off the beaten track without worrying about getting stranded somewhere.

At the end of the day, the whole trip inc flights etc came in at under £10k for the family of 4.

I'm pulling together a video from the trip at the moment and will post it when complete. It will make you want to go!!
